If you’re a fan of detective and mystery stories, then Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective (Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri) is the manga for you! The Japanese manga series, written and illustrated by Akira Amano, has become widely popular after its serialization in Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ in October 2020. It now has ten volumes, with more yet to come.
What’s more? Shueisha made the manga available in English and Spanish on the Manga Plus app and website for its fans around the world to read. The manga was even nominated for ‘Best Web Manga’ in the Next Best Manga Awards in 2021. It ranked an exciting 14th out of 50 nominees, classifying it as a must-read.
Gaining recognition from famously talented mystery writers like Rintaro Norizuki and Sako Aizawa, the manga is expected to live up to our hype about the plotlines. “Authentic mystery manga for the new era,” said Aizawa while talking about the written series. Interested enough? Let’s see what makes this series worth a read.
Plot
Veteran and amateur Ron Kamonohashi and Totomaru ‘Toto’ Ishiki team up to solve complex mysteries. Ron was the star student at the police academy, Blue Detective Training Academy, but his life fell apart when he was held accountable for a fatal incident due to “temporary insanity.” This incident is called “Bloody Field Trip,” and Ron has been in isolation since then. That is until unexperienced Totomaru reaches out to Kamonohashi for help on a case, and Ron finds himself doing what he loves most once again.

Worth A Read?
Let’s first talk about what we can praise. As per a reviewer, taking on the ‘Gintoki-kun’ style, Ron Kamonohashi is often described as quirky and unorthodox. The “Boke/Tsukkomi” trope, which essentially means the smart-dumb trope (Ron being the smart one here, and his ‘dumb’ counterpart refers to Totomaru), is a good dynamic for this mystery comedy genre of manga. Avid manga/anime fans know exactly what to expect when such a trope is thrown into the mix.
When it comes to the illustrations in the panels, it is nothing short of flawless. The way Amano has successfully delivered the contents of each panel without any confusion makes it very easy to read and enjoy. From the character design to the emotions, Amano gives the fans no room for complaint.
Now to talk of what didn’t go well. According to readers on the subreddit, the heavy dependence on Ron made it kind of repetitive and took away from the potential of the side characters. Totomaru is known for only one kind of interaction. His “oh, I cannot solve this case” approach and the fact that he isn’t given many emotional layers makes the manga boring after a while.
On the other hand, Ron seems very intriguing and fun, but he comes off as fast-paced. Yes, he can solve the cases in different ways, but it is never spoken about in detail. His thinking process isn’t fully disclosed, and then bam! he solved the case. With the end of the first part of the manga on April 30th, the manga is set to return after a break on June 4th, 2023. This manga has room for improvement, but we have to wait until the anime to see if they turn it up a notch!
