A successful action-adventure romantic comedy of the 1980s. Romancing the Stone was a hit at the time and it collected over $115 million worldwide. Loved by fans, this movie also got its sequel called The Jewel of the Nile.
The story can be a bit tacky for today’s taste. I mean it had an action sequence with the hero and a crocodile. However, since it is a comedy it all makes sense and it’s entertaining to watch. Director Robert Zemeckis shot to fame after this movie, he also got the green light to make Back to the Future after this movie’s success.
Starring Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, and Danny DeVito in the lead roles who earned a great name after this movie. Douglas is also one of the producers of Romancing the stones and it is one of his firsts as a producer. This movie was rewarded with plenty of awards including two Golden Globes and one critic’s choice.
Even today, people find the movie iconic and entertaining. So much so that there were discussions on a reboot. Even NBC bought streaming rights for a Tv series adaptation But nothing ended up happening. Well, we never know, it still might happen!
The Plot and Ending Explained
The story of Romancing the Stone is about a New York romance Novelist Joan Wilder. Joan is a struggling writer who goes on an unexpected adventure to save her sister, Elaine. The shocking turn of events begins with the murder of Elaine’s husband and her kidnapping. Joan bumps into Jack on her adventure and the two really hit it off. Then the rest of the crazy adventure in the hunt for a treasure unfolds.
The ending is quite weird, we see that Jack drowns in the Crocodile pool while trying to get the gem. But apparently, he survives and manages to get the treasure from inside of the crocodile. And is standing in a pair of boots made from that crocodile’s skin at the end of the film. That is the comical part I guess! Here we thought that yet another Jack drowned trying to save his love. But who knew he could even beat a crocodile!
The only explanation this ending could have is that it is fiction! And literally, anything is possible in fiction. Since it was an action rom-com, it had to end on a happy note, as it did for Jack and Joan. Jack buys a sailboat (the irony!) in exchange for the Gem and names it Angelina. No, he wasn’t cheating on Joan! Angelina is the name of the heroine of Joan’s novels. A happy ending indeed!
Is Romancing The Stone Available to Watch Online?
It’s an OG movie so the DVDs are always available on Flipkart and Amazon. But it is also streaming online in some parts of the world.
India does not have any streaming platform to watch Romancing the Stone yet. But for the US and UK audiences, the film is available on Amazon Prime Video as well as on Disney plus Hotstar. Hulu is also streaming Romancing the stone, so viewers can take the free trial and stream it online.
Why Was This Movie Such a Smash?
The makers of this film really under expected. They rather thought that this film will be a massive fail after watching the edits. But to their pleasant surprise, Romancing the Stones was loved by audiences!
Of course, the action and the storyline were unique at that time. But the major selling point for this film was the chemistry between Turner and Douglas. Katherine Turner even admitted that they had chemistry on set and that she had a huge crush on him. Well, fans can surely not deny the obvious charm these two shared on screen.
Everybody loves a good entertaining film, Right? Romancing the stone will make you question the bizarre, enjoy the non-sense and laugh out loud. Even though it’s a bit exaggerated, that is the fun part! If you want to have a family movie night this is the one for you. Just throw logic out the window and enjoy. The massy yet classy action rom-com is a fun watch for sure!
