Rockstar Games is revisiting one of the Grand Theft Auto series’ recurring themes in Grand Theft Auto 6: the American Dream. Ahead of the game’s release, narrative lead Rupert Humphries has suggested that the dream has become less about extraordinary wealth and more about achieving basic financial stability.
In an interview with LOVE Magazine, Humphries discussed how the franchise’s portrayal of American ambition has evolved since Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5. His comments offer insight into the social themes that will shape the upcoming game’s fictional version of Florida.
GTA 6 WILL EXPLORE A MORE MODEST AMERICAN DREAM
Humphries recalled that GTA 4 explored the illusion of America as a land of opportunity through an immigrant’s story, while GTA 5 continued the series’ increasingly cynical take on the country.
However, he believes the meaning of the American Dream has shifted. Rather than pursuing extraordinary success, people may now aspire to more achievable goals, such as owning a home and becoming debt-free.
“Maybe the American Dream is more modest now,”
Humphries said.
“It’s a house for your family and your loans paid off instead of wild success.”
He added that even these modest ambitions could remain beyond the reach of the average person.

The comments suggest that GTA 6 will continue examining economic inequality, although through a contemporary setting and updated perspective.
Humphries identified Miami and Southern Florida as particularly fitting locations for exploring the contrast between immense wealth and unchecked ambition. The region’s mix of luxury, financial pressure and competing aspirations provides fertile ground for the franchise’s exaggerated satire.
GTA 6 takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, which draws heavily from Florida, with Vice City serving as a major setting. Rockstar has previously used its fictional locations to satirise American culture, consumerism and the pursuit of success.
Humphries’ remarks do not confirm exactly how these themes will shape Jason and Lucia’s story. They do, however, indicate that the American Dream remains relevant to the series, even as its definition changes. This time, the pursuit of a stable life may be just as significant as the franchise’s familiar displays of wealth and excess.
