Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto believes the gaming industry has moved beyond the race for the most powerful hardware, arguing that players now value experiences over technical specifications.

His comments come as Nintendo continues to build on the success of the Nintendo Switch, which has become one of the best-selling gaming systems in history despite trailing PlayStation and Xbox in raw performance.

Speaking in a recent interview with Famitsu, Miyamoto reflected on Nintendo’s long-standing philosophy of prioritizing innovative gameplay over hardware specs, a strategy that began with systems like the Nintendo DS and Wii.

Miyamoto says players want more than powerful hardware

Looking back on the Switch’s nearly decade-long lifespan, Miyamoto said he was pleased the console remained successful for eight to nine years, suggesting consumer priorities have shifted.

“I think that customers are no longer just looking for specs,”

Miyamoto said.

“I think the ideal is that ‘if you buy the software, you can play it on the device you have at home.'”

Rather than competing directly with rival platforms through processing power, Nintendo has consistently focused on delivering gameplay experiences that can only be achieved on its own hardware. That philosophy helped the hybrid Nintendo Switch stand out despite offering lower technical specifications than competing consoles.

Nintendo continues to prioritize unique gameplay

Miyamoto also highlighted the advantages of Nintendo developing software for a single hardware ecosystem. Compared with smartphones, which require developers to support numerous devices and configurations, Nintendo’s dedicated platform allows teams to work more efficiently.

He jokingly added,

“We still want to make a living with minimal effort… that’s half a joke,”

before explaining that reducing unnecessary development work ultimately helps create a better production environment.

Nintendo’s strategy has proven successful over the years. The Nintendo Switch has surpassed 150 million units sold worldwide, becoming one of the company’s most successful consoles and reinforcing its focus on gameplay innovation over hardware competition.
