Later this year, a Road House remake will be available on Amazon Prime Video, but it goes much beyond a standard recreation. The movie has been engulfed in controversy in recent months, from casting decisions to producer changes, in addition to what seems to be a new plot and setting.
Here’s everything we know about the turmoil that went into making the film and the Road House revival. It’s unclear why they chose to recreate the cult film from 1989, but rumours about it have been circulating for almost a decade.
Variety said in 2015 that Ronda Rousey would be replacing Patrick Swayze in the iconic role of the bouncer. In 2016, MGM was prepared to begin production, having already completed other iconic spinoffs, like the Rocky spinoff Creed.
Even though Rousey went to the extent of contacting Lisa Niemi, Swayze’s widow, for permission to assume the famous part, Rousey was never cast in the role. When it was eventually announced that Road House would return in November 2021 without Ronda Rousey, the idea was eventually shelved.
Plot Of The Movie
The Road House remake’s plot is unknown, however there are some significant changes. The film’s setting is one of the main distinctions. This adaptation of Road House is set in the Florida Keys as opposed to Missouri.
Dalton is no longer just a bouncer; he is a former UFC fighter, which is another significant distinction. The storylines of the two stories are somewhat similar in that Dalton eventually works at a roadhouse where things are not what they appear.
Considering that the first Road House was released about 40 years ago, this appears to be a contemporary retelling of the original tale.
Cast Of The Movie
In the Road House version, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Dalton and is accompanied by several other cast members. Notably, Conor McGregor, the UFC champion, will also feature in the film, though it is unclear what role he will play. According to Deadline, he will portray an original character rather than himself.
Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, and Bob Menery are among the other actors joining the cast of the film.
Road House Release Date
The international premiere of Road House is slated to take place on March 8, 2024, as the opening night feature at South by Southwest.
On March 21, 2024, Amazon MGM Studios is scheduled to release it on Prime Video for the rest of the world. Despite having its world debut at South by Southwest, this movie won’t be shown on a large screen. Instead of being released in theatres, Road House will be streamed on Amazon Prime.
