Dominic Sessa, who recently became well-known for his role in the Oscar-winning movie The Holdovers, is now preparing for his next big project. According to a report from Deadline, Sessa will play the famous chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain in an upcoming movie called Tony.
The film is being made by Star Thrower Entertainment, a company that has been nominated for an Oscar before. A24, another well-known film company, is reportedly in talks to get the rights to the movie.
The biopic, which has already received a lot of attention, will be directed by Matt Johnson. Tim and Trevor White of Star Thrower, along with Matt Miller, will produce the film. The script was written by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels, and Emily Rose will be the executive producer.
While neither A24 nor Star Thrower have commented on the project yet, excitement is building for what promises to be an interesting and personal look at Bourdain’s life.
Anthony Bourdain’s path to fame is legendary in the culinary world. He spent the 1980s and 1990s working in various kitchens in Manhattan and eventually became the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles.
However, it was his honest and direct essay collection about the hidden side of the restaurant industry, published in The New Yorker, that brought him into the public eye. His raw, straightforward writing style connected with readers and quickly made him a unique voice in the food media scene.
Bourdain’s fame continued to grow when he started hosting several TV shows, especially Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel. Over its eight seasons, the show made Bourdain a global star, admired for his fearless exploration of cultures and cuisines around the world. Sadly, Bourdain’s life ended in 2018 when he died by suicide.
It’s not clear yet which part of Bourdain’s life Tony will focus on, but the film is expected to explore both his culinary talent and his struggles. For Sessa, playing Bourdain is another major step in his growing career.
After his standout performance in The Holdovers alongside Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Sessa has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand young actors. While Giamatti and Randolph received Oscar nominations—Randolph even won the award—Sessa’s performance was highly praised, proving that he could hold his own with experienced actors.
