Justin Roiland’s recasting in the voices of the popular adult animated series Rick and Morty on its seventh season by Ian Cardoni hasn’t stopped the fans of the show from tuning in for a few laughs. Never mind the fact that the cartoon’s creator is out due to his bad behavior. Instead, we’re shifting gears to check out what went down in the last couple of episodes.
So far, we’ve seen Mr. Poopybutthole, Rick going to therapy with Dr. Wong, voiced by Susan Sarandon, and a few tropes from the show’s trajectory, but as it seems, the show seems to be sort of weaving a story within supporting characters this season as we move along each chapter.
Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 3 Recap
When the President of the United States bursts into a therapy session that Rick is holding with Dr. Wong because the President wants to romance Dr. Wong, Rick gets upset.
The President bursts into Rick’s therapy session under the false pretense of seeking his assistance with a werewolf leprechaun monster with a terrible illness. Rick then recoils, saying that his therapy has been beneficial, and asks him not to date Dr. Wong because he thinks that therapy is helping him.
The President summons Rick back for another mission. The President informs Rick of a new mission in Virginia, where love is now legal and entails no criminal activity or grievances against the state government.
The President is now wary of a possible cult, and it’s obvious that he’s plotted a scheme to obtain Dr. Wong’s phone number and Rick’s “permission” to go out with his therapist.
The President then assigns Dr. Wong to the new Virginia mission, and as they travel into the love-controlled state of Virginia, it’s evident that their bond is growing. It soon transpires that the state is under the control of some kind of body-snatching hive mind, and Unity has made a comeback and is attempting to establish a base on Earth.
However, Rick has created anti-Unity technology, and it is discovered that Unity has come back because she is concerned that Rick is looking for “him” once more.
Rick ignores Unity’s pleas as they flee Virginia, stating that he lost himself the last time he looked for him. The President breaks it off with a dome, cutting off its connection to Unity. After the break, it becomes clear that Virginia is still being held in the dome and that this is just another incident that has drawn attention due to all of the bizarre things the President has done in the past episodes of the show.
Rick is upset that Dr. Wong is there at all, but Unity gets in touch with the war room. Unity explains that in order to truly free the people of Virginia, she must make amends with them. However, Rick still mistrusts her because she abandoned him in the past in an attempt to blend in with more people, so she quickly makes the decision to leave orbit.
As Rick and the President argue some more, Dr. Wong says she wants to break up with the President and doesn’t want to pursue their relationship any further.
When Summer finds Rick back in the garage, she goes to him to try to help him since she realizes Unity has come back, and all Rick can do is yell at her.
The President keeps watching the news report that is critical of him and gets even more depressed about the possibility that he won’t be reelected as he makes his way back to the dome over Virginia. As Unity had forewarned, the President ultimately assumed control of Virginia in an attempt to reclaim the hive mind for its perfect approval rating.
As the President’s hive mind continues to grow, Morty informs Rick that Unity might return. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the President has also taken control of the news anchors, who only serve to endorse the President. Rick makes the decision to make things right by rescuing Dr. Wong from the President’s hive mind.
He needs her assistance to return to Unity and attempt to persuade Rick that he is not as bad as she believes. Rick admitted that he still harbors misgivings toward Unity and that no matter how many times she called, he never picked up. Dr. Wong clarifies that although it’s a gradual process, Rick has started to change and that his handling of Unity was incorrect.
After that, Unity launches an invasion of the President’s mind to liberate the Earth, and the two engage in a more intense conflict. Unity manages to seize control of the entire collective mind. Unity says that if it weren’t for Rick, she would never be releasing millions of people and that this is something she has never really done before.
She is obviously hurt by it, and even though Rick has finally opened up to her and said he “trusts her now,” she still doesn’t feel the same way about him. Then, with regret, Rick goes back to his garage and starts reading the messages Unity left him. It’s obvious that she loved him and wasn’t just concerned that Rick was pursuing the guy.
The President then says Rick might need therapy and heads to the Oval Office. Following the credits, the host of Interdimensional Cable, Mr. Stabby, appears on a show akin to Larry David, discussing how, despite killing thousands of people, he is a symbol of someone with swords for arms and legs.
