In May of next year, the cast of the cherished television series “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” will reunite at Newcastle’s City Hall to celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary. The 1983 release of the Geordie comedy followed the exploits of a group of builders employed overseas. The stars and crew will reunite for a nostalgic look back at the history of the show, complete with performances, bloopers, and anecdotes.
Celebrity actor Jimmy Nail, who played Bricklayer Oz in television series, tweeted his excitement, saying he was looking forward to “dusting off my duds” and “playing some top tunes” at the event.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the O2 City Hall. It promises to be a special night honoring the creation, reception, and enduring influence of the beloved television classic. Purchases of tickets for this unique event will begin at 9 AM on Friday, December 15. The entire show’s revenue will be split between Sunday for Sammy and FACT (Fighting All Cancers Together).
“Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” aired for two series
In the 1980s, “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” aired for two series. It then made a reappearance in 2002 and 2004 for another series as well as a two-part special. The comedy tackled the economic downturn by showing seven jobless construction workers from various regions of England journeying to Germany in pursuit of employment.
Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Jimmy Nail, Gary Holton, Christopher Fairbank, Pat Roach, and Timothy Spall were among the seven leading actors who became well-known due to the show. Regretfully, Holton died in 1985 while the second series was being filmed.
Jimmy Nail and his band will play a musical
On May 11, a fan website is hosting the 40th anniversary event, which comedian Jason Cook will be hosting. The tribute show’s proceeds will be split equally between the cancer charity FACT and the performing arts charity The Sunday for Sammy Trust. Kevin Whately and Tim Healy are confirmed attendees; Healy has expressed his excitement to interact with longtime friends and supporters.
Actor Jimmy Nail disclosed that he and his band would perform a musical selection based on the things that Oz, his character, found most enjoyable. A combination of nostalgia and popular music is promised at the event, making it an unforgettable experience for both attendees and fans.

A British comedy-drama television series called “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” followed seven British construction workers as they set out to find work overseas.
Their lives and jobs on a construction site in Düsseldorf, Germany, are followed in the first season of the show. Franc Roddam created the show, which was primarily written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, who are well-known for their work on “The Likely Lads,” “Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?,” and “Porridge.” Mick Connell, a bricklayer from Stockton-on-Tees, provided the idea for the show.
The outstanding ensemble featured Gary Holton, Pat Roach, Tim Healy, Jimmy Nail, Timothy Spall, Christopher Fairbank, and Noel Clarke, who replaced Holton in the third and fourth series as well as the two-part finale. The show debuted on ITV in 1983, 1984, and 1986. In 2002 and 2004, BBC One aired two series as well as a Christmas special after a sixteen-year break.
Acknowledged for its influence, the first German television series ranked 46th on the British Film Institute’s 2000 list of the 100 Best British TV Series. In 2015, the 1980s series celebrated its 60th anniversary by winning the title of ITV’s Favorite TV Programme of All Time in a readers’ poll published in Radio Times.
The program also aired in the first episode of the BBC documentary series “Drama Connections” back in 2005.
