Proton GE has received two rapid updates with Proton GE 11-4 and 11-5, bringing a major round of controller improvements alongside game-specific fixes. The main release, Proton GE 11-4, introduces new compatibility options for DualShock 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, particularly for games running outside Steam or titles with incomplete PlayStation controller support.

A follow-up Proton GE 11-5 release was then issued as a hotfix for Easy Anti-Cheat, making the newer version the recommended choice for users who want the latest fixes.

Proton GE 11-4 Adds Three New Controller Options

The biggest change in Proton GE 11-4 is improved controller handling through three new compatibility methods. The first allows DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers to appear as DualShock 4 devices, which can help older games recognize them correctly while retaining PlayStation-style controls.

The second option converts Sony controller inputs into XInput, Microsoft’s widely supported controller standard on PC. This is aimed at games where PlayStation controllers are detected incorrectly or produce faulty button mappings.

The third option provides a Steam Input compatibility fallback. This can be particularly useful for games that depend heavily on Steam Input, with Monster Hunter Wilds specifically benefiting from the change.

The update also improves Sony controller haptics, speaker audio and hotplug behavior. Support for PlayStation controller functionality has been expanded to several non-Sony games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced.

Monster Hunter Wilds and Other Games Receive Fixes

Monster Hunter Wilds receives several improvements in Proton GE 11-4, including controller handling and USB audio fixes. The update also improves the game’s save-import compatibility by preventing missing Steam userdata paths from triggering ProtonFixes errors.

Several other games receive targeted fixes as well. The release addresses issues affecting Black Desert Online, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, Dungeon Town, Heroes Chronicles and Heroes of Newerth Reborn.

Beyond controllers, Proton GE 11-4 updates major compatibility components, including DXVK, VKD3D, and VKD3D-Proton. It also includes fixes for video playback in Street Fighter 6, a video-related crash in Killing Floor 3 and a launcher issue affecting Cyberpunk 2077.

The subsequent Proton GE 11-5 hotfix addresses an Easy Anti-Cheat issue introduced or exposed by the previous release. For users updating Proton GE now, 11-5 is therefore the more suitable version to install.
