Prosecutors are urging a 40-year prison term for David Wayne DePape, convicted of a terrifying attack on Nancy Pelosi’s home. DePape, found guilty of attempting to kidnap the former U.S. House Speaker and assaulting her husband with a hammer, faces federal charges resembling terrorism.
In a sentencing memo filed in San Francisco’s federal court, prosecutors emphasize the need for strict penalties.
They argue that DePape’s actions, fueled by extremist ideologies, warrant no leniency. Despite not being labeled as terrorism, his crimes align with federal definitions due to their aim of influencing government conduct through intimidation.
DePape’s attack occurred days before the 2022 midterm elections. Breaking into Pelosi‘s home, he assaulted her husband, who suffered skull fractures.
Evidence suggests DePape was driven by far-right conspiracies, including beliefs propagated by the QAnon movement.
During trial testimony, DePape admitted intending to abduct Pelosi, displaying a lack of remorse. Prosecutors emphasized the severity of his crimes and the need for deterrence to prevent similar incidents. They stress the potential influence on individuals harboring violent ideologies.
While DePape awaits sentencing, he also faces state charges, including attempted murder, carrying a potential sentence of 13 years to life. Despite pleading not guilty, his actions underscore the danger posed by extremist beliefs.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 17. Prosecutors assert that imposing the maximum penalties for DePape’s offenses is necessary to safeguard public officials and deter future acts of violence influenced by radical ideologies.
