Let’s find out about Princess Diaries Filming Locations. A coming-of-age comedy movie from 2001, The Princess Diaries was made by Walt Disney Pictures and helmed by Garry Marshall.
The movie, which was written by Gina Wendkos and starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, is loosely based on Meg Cabot’s 2000 young adult novel of the same name. Other cast members include Héctor Elizondo, Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo, Caroline Goodall, and Robert Schwartzman.
The movie centers on Mia Thermopolis, a quiet American teen who discovers she is the rightful heir to a European country. Mia must choose whether to accede to her hereditary throne or relinquish it permanently under the guidance of her estranged grandmother, the current queen of the realm.
Grove High School student Mia Thermopolis lives in a renovated firehouse in San Francisco with her single mother, Helen. Mia is not well-liked by her friends, has a fear of public speaking, has a love for Josh Bryant, and is frequently teased by Lana Thomas, Josh’s popular girlfriend. Mia only has Lilly Moscovitz, a social outcast, and Michael, Lilly’s older brother, who is secretly in love with her.

In San Francisco, where Mia Thermopolis lives with her artist mother in a former firehouse at 724 Brazil Avenue and Athens Street in the Excelsior District, quite a distance to the south of the city, Garry Marshall relocates Meg Cabot’s youthful fantasy from New York. She must travel a long distance on her scooter to get to school.
‘Anthony R Grove High School’ has its facade at 2601 Lyon Street and Green Street in the affluent Marina District to the north of the city. It’s a very grand private mansion rather than a school at all. The school is made up of three distinct buildings put together as a whole. A few streets to the east, on top of a school, is where Mia and her closest friend Lilly reconcile on the rooftop basketball court.
It has been requested that we not advertise the school to deter trespassers. As always, remember to respect private property, even though I’m sure no one complains about tourists gazing at and photographing public spaces. However, the campus and interior of the school are much more distant from Los Angeles. Alverno High School is located in Sierra Madre, east of Pasadena, at 200 North Michillinda Avenue. The campus has a history in the movie industry, having been featured in films like A Walk In The Clouds and Legally Blonde, among others.
The climbing school called “Rocks Around The Clock,” where Mia works after school on a part-time basis and finds out that her grandmother is traveling from “Genovia,” appears to be on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, but it’s actually in Los Angeles. Hangar 18 is located in Hawthorne, a suburb to the south of the city, at 4926 West Rosecrans Avenue.
The “Consulate of Genovia” is located in downtown Los Angeles in the Doheny Mansion, 8 Chester Place. Its imposing facade and opulent rotunda may be recognizable from Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell and Spider-Man 3, as well as Brian Helgeland’s Mel Gibson-starring Payback.
Lilly and Michael, two of Mia’s classmates, are picked up in a limo from their home at 15 Phoenix Terrace, a little cul-de-sac tucked away on Pacific Avenue between Jones and Taylor Streets just north of Nob Hill, to return to the real San Francisco.
For no other reason than aesthetics, Queen Clarisse and Mia cross the Golden Gate Bridge on their day off to explore the city. On the western side of San Francisco, oppositely, was a display of vintage penny arcade games that they went to.
At that time, the museum was located in the cellar of the former Cliff House on Point Lobos Avenue (1090). You may now find the Musée Mécanique in Fisherman’s Wharf, on Pier 45 at the foot of Taylor Street, if you wish to explore this fascinating collection of what arcade games were like in the pre-electronic era.
The abandoned ruins of the historic Sutro Baths, now a component of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, are seen from The Cliff House, which is positioned on a peninsula above the cliffs north of Ocean Beach. The cult classic Harold and Maude from 1971 may bring back memories of the Sutro Baths.
