Starz is dropping the final episodes of this spinoff of a drug-dealing crime universe with Joseph Sikora, and it gets better by the minute. In Power Book IV: Force, we see why the title —Force— is crucial here as Sikora’s Tommy Egan makes his way to become the drug kingpin of Chicago. All the while he fights a two-front war: One with the rival drug gangs, and one with law enforcement trailing on his every step.
The impact that Power’s storytelling has is amazing, not only because despite being a thug show, it is very well written, but also because of the strong character story arc development and it’s parallelisms with strategies, with the chess game, with planning actions and facing consequences is crucial in the way the story is told.
As the final episodes slowly make their way to the small screens, we see a lot of challenges for the main and supporting characters, as you’ll see in our recap —that, as usual, contains spoilers for context—, you’ll see how the scriptwriters are setting us up for a climactic finale.
Recap
We begin our episode with several characters of the Power universe dealing with their ups and downs, their wins and losses, their woes and their double lives, and how their actions have consequences on them and those who surround them.
We see how DIamond, a character who’s been trying to leave the thug life behind, accepts that thug life isn’t like a pair of jeans you just get rid of. That sh*t keeps coming back to you to bite you in the ass.
Then, the show moves to Shanti and Tommy, who are engaged in who’s boss in the Chicago drug trade. Each of them is making their move. Meanwhile, Stacy Marks, on the cops’s side, tries to get the upper hand by trying to stop Tommy from dealing drugs. Stacy talks about a tracker found in Vic’s ride, and that’s an important lead.
This episode talks about struggles, past actions, and how the moral choices keep morphing into the destiny of each cast member. Diamond, whom we mentioned earlier, is trying to teach a kid named Leon the ropes, but when Leon is bullied, he ends up dead, and Diamond is shocked by that.
If you see Power’s intro, they show chess pieces, telling us the knack that the scriptwriters and storytellers of this series have for strategy: Cops and criminals are playing a dangerous game: Claudia and Shanti are vying for supremacy and power, they make their moves, they make alliances, they watch each other carefully, just as two chess players would.
Back to Stacy, who isn’t afraid to work that chessboard and move the pieces and even bend the rules to get Tommy. And Tommy is also making his moves.
By the end of the episode, we see how a drunk and drugged Diamond goes back to the thug life when Mr. Reeves tries to apprehend him. Tommy can tell how the return of the ruthless Diamond is a big potential for the biz, laughs at that fact, and realizes he can truly become the king of Chicago.
