Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has drawn criticism for suggesting a connection between some pro-Palestinian protesters and Russia during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Pelosi claimed that calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict was “Mr. Putin’s message,” insinuating a direct link to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s agenda.
The remarks come as pro-Palestinian protesters have disrupted President Biden’s events and Pelosi’s recent gathering in Seattle.
Pelosi acknowledged that some protesters may be spontaneous and sincere, but she asserted that others could be connected to Russia. While not labeling them as plants, she called for an investigation into the financing, requesting the FBI’s involvement. Critics, including the head of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Nihad Awad, expressed deep concern, deeming Pelosi’s comments delusional and authoritarian. The criticism underlined the negative impact of decades of dehumanization of the Palestinian people and called for respecting the will of the American people.
Pelosi’s spokesperson defended her remarks, stating that she supports peaceful protest but is alert to foreign adversaries meddling in American politics. While there is no reported evidence linking Russia to pro-Palestinian protests, the history of Russian interference in U.S. politics, particularly in elections, has been well-documented.
