The debate over what makes an action RPG satisfying continues to divide players, and Path of Exile co-creator Chris Wilson believes one classic Diablo 2 mechanic helps explain why many longtime fans remain loyal to Blizzard’s iconic game.
According to Wilson, the appeal lies in the game’s “arbitrary” speed breakpoints, which encourage players to carefully optimize their builds rather than simply becoming stronger with every stat increase.
Wilson shared his thoughts in a recent video discussing RPG progression systems and why modern games often struggle to replicate the same sense of mastery found in older ARPGs.
Chris Wilson Explains the Appeal of Diablo 2’s Breakpoints
Speaking in a YouTube video, Wilson explained that Diablo 2 doesn’t increase animation speeds in a smooth, continuous way. Instead, improvements occur only after reaching specific thresholds.
“There are arbitrary sweet spots of attack speed, cast speed, and hit recovery that players want to reach, because the jump in animation speed happens all at once,”
Wilson said.
He noted that this design led players to create detailed breakpoint charts and optimize their characters around those values.
“Many of them had a lot of fun doing so, and it was an important part of the game for them,”
he added.
Wilson suggested that newer action RPGs often offer smoother and more intuitive progression, but that can remove some of the strategic planning that hardcore players enjoy.

Instead of discovering meaningful thresholds through experimentation, modern systems tend to reward every incremental stat increase equally. According to Wilson, this makes character progression more straightforward but less engaging for players who enjoy theorycrafting and optimization.
His comments highlight why Diablo 2 continues to influence modern ARPGs like Path of Exile, even decades after its release, as developers continue balancing accessibility for newcomers with the complex systems longtime fans appreciate.
