In a demonstration against the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Palestinian students disrupted a meeting attended by European Union diplomats in the West Bank on Tuesday.
Witnesses recounted how the students pelted some of the diplomats’ vehicles with stones, including one incident where a back window was smashed.
The EU diplomats stationed in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories had gathered at the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit near Ramallah for the meeting. Despite efforts at dialogue, the situation escalated, prompting the diplomats to depart.
Videos circulated on social media later depicted protesters surrounding a car and smashing its window with stones. The protesters aimed to convey their opposition to any perceived complicity in the Gaza conflict.
Amr Kayed, a student from Birzeit University, asserted that they compelled the EU diplomats to leave to send a clear message.
Oliver Owcza, the German representative to the Palestinian territories, expressed regret over the disruption but reiterated the commitment to engaging in constructive dialogue with Palestinian partners.
Prior to the incident, Palestinian students had posted a message on Facebook, calling for a protest against the presence of the German representative due to Germany’s support for Israel during the conflict.
Germany’s staunch support for Israel has been longstanding, highlighted by significant military exports. However, this support has drawn criticism from Palestinians, particularly amidst heightened tensions and violence in the region.
The West Bank, already plagued by rising violence before the conflict, has witnessed increased hostilities with intensified Israeli raids and Palestinian street attacks.
The enduring conflict underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics and longstanding grievances in the region.
Despite international efforts to address the conflict and establish a peaceful resolution, the situation remains volatile, with both sides continuing to grapple with the ramifications of decades of conflict and occupation.
