One Piece: Gear 5 Is Not The End of Luffy’s Transformations

Luffy Gear 5 Transformation

One of the most anticipated moments in One Piece in recent years was the awakening of Monkey D. Luffy’s Devil Fruit.

The debut of Gear 5 sent the internet into a frenzy, and even though it might feel like it happened just yesterday, it’s already been three years since Luffy’s most powerful (and bizarre) form became reality during the intense battle against Kaido in the Wano arc.

Theories surrounding Eiichiro Oda’s work are always abundant, and now many fans are wondering if Luffy’s supposedly ultimate form is actually incomplete.

The various depictions of Nika throughout One Piece often show him wielding a sword, spear, or shield. Could the main character need one of these weapons to fully awaken his power?

A Stronger Luffy Than Ever

One of the great mysteries in One Piece over the decades was the true nature of Luffy’s Devil Fruit—the Hito Hito no Mi is actually a Mythical Zoan, model Nika, which allows its user to transform into the embodiment of the legendary Sun God Nika.

This grants Luffy an ability limited only by his imagination, but recent battles suggest he still hasn’t reached his full potential. The fruit’s previous user, the enigmatic Joy Boy, apparently had power that surpassed what Luffy currently possesses.

The idea that Oda might be hiding an additional element that boosts Luffy’s strength is a theory that’s gaining traction. While Luffy’s imagination makes almost anything possible, the presence of an extra tool—possibly a weapon—could prove decisive in freeing the world.

Luffy Awakening

Whether or not he eventually wields a weapon, Luffy will have to continue evolving to face the final confrontations of the series, and the current events in the Elbaph arc will serve as a major test of that growth.
