Within the Dragon Ball saga, Goku’s son Gohan stands out as a unique character due to his aversion to fighting and his aspiration to become a scholar. Unlike his father, who thrives on battling powerful foes, Gohan’s early training under Piccolo shaped his distinct personality.
As a child, Gohan endured intense and harsh training, which not only impacted him but also resonated with the voice actors.
Masako Nozawa, Gohan’s voice actor, recalled an incident during an interview when Joji Yanami, the voice of King Kai, angrily confronted Toshio Furukawa, Piccolo’s voice actor, over Piccolo’s severe training methods.
Nozawa recounted how Yanami, deeply immersed in his role, was upset by the way Piccolo treated young Gohan. Furukawa, taken aback, explained that he was merely voicing his character and had no control over Piccolo’s actions.
Initially introduced as an antagonist, Piccolo’s character evolved into an ally, taking on the responsibility of training Gohan after Goku’s death.
Despite Piccolo’s tough methods, which included leaving Gohan to survive alone in the wild and engaging in constant combat to teach martial arts, his training was crucial. While fans criticized Piccolo for being overly harsh on the young Gohan, his rigorous methods were essential for unlocking Gohan’s potential.
Although Gohan initially resented the harsh training, he eventually recognized its value. This grueling preparation helped him become one of the strongest fighters in the Dragon Ball universe, living up to his father’s legacy and earning Piccolo his redemption.
