Nintendo emerged as the biggest winner at the CEDEC Awards 2026, with Donkey Kong Bananza leading a clean sweep of the event’s highest honors.

Announced during the awards ceremony at Pacifico Yokohama on July 23, the game secured three Grand Awards while Nintendo Music claimed the fourth, giving Nintendo development teams every Grand Award presented across the Engineering, Game Design, Sound, and Visual Arts divisions.

The CEDEC Awards recognize outstanding achievements in game development technology, with winners selected by conference attendees and speakers. While several studios, including Capcom and Sandfall Interactive, earned Excellence Awards, Nintendo dominated the ceremony thanks to Donkey Kong Bananza’s innovative use of voxel technology and Nintendo Music’s continued evolution as a game music platform.

Donkey Kong Bananza captured the Engineering, Game Design, and Visual Arts Grand Awards, making it the most celebrated game of CEDEC 2026. Judges praised its voxel-based destruction technology for allowing players to freely reshape the environment while maintaining smooth performance and gameplay.

In the Engineering Division, the committee highlighted the team’s ability to seamlessly combine visual destruction, physics, and performance optimization into a cohesive experience. The developers reflected on the challenge by saying that

“our accumulated past development experience and common sense were completely inapplicable,”

recalling that Donkey Kong initially struggled to move across voxel terrain during early development.

The title also earned the Game Design Grand Award for transforming Donkey Kong’s strength into gameplay built around breaking, digging, climbing, and exploration. According to the development team, the guiding philosophy throughout development was

“there are discoveries beyond what you break,”

encouraging players to experiment with the destructible world in unexpected ways.

In the Visual Arts Division, judges commended the way voxel technology unified artists, engineers, designers, and quality assurance into a single production pipeline while delivering a fully destructible world running at 60 FPS on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo also claimed the Sound Division Grand Award through Nintendo Music, which was recognized for continuously expanding its extensive game music catalog and introducing playback features tailored specifically to video game soundtracks. The service’s development team said the recognition encourages them to continue delivering game music to players in uniquely Nintendo ways.

Beyond Nintendo’s sweep, the ceremony also recognized Monster Hunter Wilds, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Ghost of Yōtei, Street Fighter 6, and several indie developers with Excellence Awards, showcasing the breadth of innovation across the industry. Even so, CEDEC 2026 will likely be remembered as the year Nintendo’s development teams set the benchmark for technical achievement across nearly every discipline of game creation.
