Netflix is taking a bold step in the gaming space with Unhinged, a new horror experience designed to be completed in a single sitting. Unlike traditional games that demand hours of commitment, Unhinged is structured as a roughly 40-minute interactive thriller, blending cinematic storytelling with accessible gameplay.

The project signals a shift in Netflix’s gaming strategy. Instead of focusing solely on mobile titles or party-style experiences, the company is now exploring deeper, narrative-driven games that align with how audiences already consume content—quick, engaging, and easy to start.

A Cinematic Horror Experience With a Unique Control System

Developed by Night School Studio, known for titles like Oxenfree, Unhinged places players in the role of Ava, a woman trapped in her apartment building during a hurricane. As tension builds, strange events begin to unfold, forcing players to navigate the environment while uncovering a larger mystery.

What sets the game apart is its control system. Instead of a traditional controller, players use their smartphones as both a flashlight and an in-game device. By pointing their phone at the screen, they control where the light shines and interact with objects in the environment.

The phone also acts as Ava’s communication tool, displaying messages and calls in real time. This dual-screen interaction creates a more immersive experience, blending real-world movement with in-game actions in a way that feels both intuitive and experimental.

The design philosophy behind Unhinged draws inspiration from earlier innovations in gaming. Director Sam Warner highlighted how older motion-based systems influenced the project, particularly the idea of merging physical actions with in-game feedback.

“That was magic,” Warner said while referencing earlier motion-control concepts. “That was the kind of thing that we are inspired by.” His comments reflect the team’s focus on recreating that sense of novelty while adapting it for modern streaming technology.

The game’s visuals are streamed directly to a TV, while the phone interface is handled separately, creating a synchronized experience across devices. This setup allows Netflix to deliver console-like gameplay without requiring dedicated hardware beyond a smartphone.

Why Netflix Is Betting on Short Games

One of the most defining aspects of Unhinged is its length. At around 40 minutes, it challenges the traditional expectations of game duration. According to Sean Krankel, head of Night School Studio, the goal is to make gaming more approachable for a broader audience.

“Our vision for this is: How do we take people who love horror and thriller films and TV shows and bring them closer to interactivity?” Krankel explained. He added that time commitment is often a barrier for new players, noting, “If people are on Netflix expecting 30 minutes to an hour of a show… this really kind of fits inside of that.”

This approach aligns closely with Netflix’s core user behavior, where viewers are accustomed to consuming content in short sessions. By matching that pattern, the platform hopes to lower the barrier to entry for gaming.

Since entering the gaming space, Netflix has experimented with various formats, including mobile games and casual party titles. However, Unhinged represents a more ambitious attempt to blend storytelling with interactivity.

The game is not designed for children or casual multiplayer sessions but instead targets fans of suspense and narrative-driven experiences. This marks a clear departure from earlier offerings and suggests a more diversified gaming portfolio moving forward.

Unlike competitors such as Google’s Stadia or Amazon’s shifting gaming initiatives, Netflix appears to be focusing on integration rather than competition—embedding games directly within its existing platform rather than building a separate ecosystem.

Release Plans and What Comes Next

Unhinged is set to launch on June 30 within Netflix’s Games section, where it will be accessible to subscribers. The company has not confirmed whether similar short-form games will follow, but the project is clearly being positioned as a test of a new format.

Krankel emphasized that this does not necessarily signal a permanent shift toward shorter games, stating that the team is exploring possibilities rather than committing to a single direction. However, the success or failure of Unhinged could influence how Netflix
