Netflix’s The Last House is quickly emerging as a potential franchise for the streaming service after an impressive opening week. The sci-fi thriller starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura generated 51.4 million hours viewed in its first three days, equivalent to 27.5 million views based on Netflix’s viewing metric.
The performance is particularly notable because The Last House arrived on Netflix on August 7 and immediately became the platform’s most-watched movie worldwide during the reported period.
The film is directed by Louis Leterrier and centers on a family mysteriously sealed inside their home, where dwindling resources and an unexplained threat force them to fight for survival. Netflix’s official synopsis confirms the central premise.
The Last House’s Streaming Performance Creates Sequel Potential
A sequel has not been announced, but the film’s rapid audience growth gives Netflix a strong commercial reason to consider continuing the story. Netflix has previously demonstrated that major-performing original films can become franchises, although viewership numbers alone do not guarantee a follow-up.
The possibility is also supported by the movie’s ending, which leaves room for the surviving family’s story to continue. Without spoiling the details, the final moments introduce an unanswered question about what lies beyond their isolated survival experience, creating an obvious direction for another movie.
A sequel could potentially expand the world beyond the original home while retaining the survival-driven premise that defines the first film.
The cast has also discussed the possibility of continuing The Last House. In an interview with ScreenRant, Wagner Moura reportedly said he was unsure whether a sequel would happen but was open to returning, leaving the door open for Netflix and the filmmakers to continue the story.
Moura previously explained to Netflix Tudum that he connected strongly with the film’s premise because he imagined how his own family might respond to being trapped inside their home. He said,
“I think about how my own family would respond and handle something like that,”
describing the story’s stakes as something he connected with deeply.
Netflix has not confirmed The Last House 2 at this time. However, with its strong opening performance, an unresolved story and a cast led by Lee and Moura, the thriller has several elements that could support a sequel.
