Netflix’s The Last House continues to attract a huge global audience despite receiving largely negative reviews from critics and viewers. The sci-fi thriller reached 72 million views during its first three weeks on Netflix, adding another 12 million views between August 17 and August 23.

The film initially debuted with 27.5 million views during its first week, making it the most-watched English-language movie on Netflix at the time. It then followed that performance with another 33.5 million views in its second week before adding 12 million more in its third week.

The Last House Remains a Netflix Streaming Success

Directed by Louis Leterrier, The Last House stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as Ann and Jason Delgado, parents who become trapped inside their home with their children after a mysterious force prevents anyone from leaving.

The family soon discovers that ordinary escape attempts are impossible, forcing them to survive with limited resources while trying to understand what is happening outside. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the story as a fight for survival against both dwindling supplies and the mysterious force keeping the family imprisoned.

Leterrier previously explained to Netflix Tudum that the movie was designed to transform the idea of a home as a place of safety into something threatening.

“The Last House challenges the idea of a safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity,”

the director said.

The film’s commercial performance has been notably different from its critical reception. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists The Last House at 22% from critics, with its critics consensus arguing that the movie becomes repetitive without delivering enough suspense or thematic depth.

Despite that response, Netflix’s weekly viewing figures show that audiences have continued returning to the movie. Its third-week total of 12 million views was enough to keep it near the top of Netflix’s English-language movie rankings, although it was overtaken by another title during that week.

The movie’s continued popularity demonstrates the difference between critical reception and streaming performance. Its straightforward survival premise, recognizable cast and mysterious supernatural threat have helped The Last House maintain interest several weeks after its August 7 Netflix debut.

With 72 million views already recorded, The Last House still has room to climb Netflix’s all-time movie rankings if its audience remains consistent. The film is currently available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
