Dave Bautista is officially preparing to take on one of the most recognizable roles in video game history after being cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series. His casting comes shortly after a dramatic physical transformation that saw the 57-year-old actor lose around 34 kg, moving away from the enormous frame that defined his WWE career and several of his earlier Hollywood roles.
Bautista replaces Ryan Hurst, who exited the project after suffering a torn bicep during filming. Bautista is now set to lead the series, with production expected to resume after the recasting. The development has also renewed attention on Bautista’s recent weight loss and whether he will build significant muscle again to portray Kratos.
Dave Bautista’s Weight Loss Comes Before His Biggest Physical Role Yet
Bautista revealed in 2024 that he had dropped from approximately 143 kg to around 109 kg after gaining more weight than intended while preparing for M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. Speaking on the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast, he admitted,
“I think I overdid it. I just got really big… I put on an uncomfortable amount of weight.”
After deciding to slim down, Bautista accepted losing some of the muscle mass he had built throughout his wrestling career.
“I’ve sacrificed a lot of muscle, but I’m okay with it because I just feel more comfortable,”
he said. His training also shifted toward cardio and jiu-jitsu, with the actor later saying he felt better physically than he had in years.

That approach makes his casting as Kratos particularly interesting. The PlayStation character is famous for his massive, muscular appearance, especially in the Norse-era God of War games that will inspire Prime Video’s adaptation. Whether Bautista will regain substantial size remains unknown, but his decades of experience in bodybuilding, professional wrestling, and physically demanding action roles give him a strong foundation.
Prime Video has ordered two seasons of God of War, with Ronald D. Moore serving as showrunner. The series follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to fulfill Faye’s final wish, adapting the emotional father-and-son story from the modern PlayStation games. Amazon’s official God of War page previously confirmed that the adaptation is focused on the events surrounding Kratos and Atreus’ journey.
Bautista’s transformation into Kratos is now one of the biggest questions surrounding the series. At 57, he may not return to the 140 kg-plus physique of his past, but his casting suggests the production believes his screen presence and physical background can bring the Ghost of Sparta to life.
