Netflix is set to bring another anime to life with a live-action adaptation of Kakegurui. Following successful adaptations like One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho, Netflix has announced the cast for its new series BET, a reimagining of Kakegurui.
BET will feature a diverse cast, including Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O’Driscoll, Aviva Mongillo, and Ryan Sutherland.
The series will draw from the original Kakegurui manga and anime, focusing on an elite boarding school where students engage in high-stakes underground gambling to maneuver the school’s intense hierarchy. Production is currently underway in Toronto, Canada, though no release date has been set.
Simon Barry is at the helm as both director and writer, with BET slated for ten episodes. The show aims to introduce Kakegurui to a broader audience. Netflix provided a brief synopsis:
“In BET, the boarding school’s hierarchy is disrupted when Yumeko, a mysterious transfer student from Japan with a dark secret and exceptional gambling skills, arrives. Her quest for revenge threatens to topple the powerful Student Council and the school’s established order.”
For those unfamiliar with Kakegurui, the series began as a manga by Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura in March 2014 and continues to this day. The anime adaptation by MAPPA debuted in September 2017 and gained significant popularity.
A Japanese live-action drama was released in 2018 and became a hit on Netflix. Now, Netflix is investing in a Hollywood adaptation with BET, aiming to bring the high-stakes drama to a global audience.
