NBA 2K27 Generates $9.9 Million From Physical PlayStation Sales as Discs Account for Just 4.6% of Revenue

NBA 2K27 has generated an estimated $9.9 million from physical PlayStation sales, with boxed copies accounting for just 4.6% of the game’s $213.4 million in total PlayStation revenue, according to Alinea Analytics’ report, Physical Game Revenues on PlayStation.

The figures place NBA 2K27 third among new 2026 PlayStation games by total revenue, but only 16th by physical revenue. The difference highlights how sports games can generate substantial earnings while relying heavily on digital purchases rather than traditional retail discs.

Alinea Analytics’ figures are estimates, not official sales disclosures from 2K or Sony. They cover PlayStation sales and should not be interpreted as the game’s total revenue across all platforms.

WHY NBA 2K27 PHYSICAL SALES MAKE UP SUCH A SMALL SHARE

NBA 2K27’s low physical revenue share follows a broader pattern among sports games. In the same report, EA Sports FC 27 generated an estimated $727.9 million in PlayStation revenue, with $64.9 million, or 8.9%, coming from physical copies.

Other sports releases show similarly small physical shares. Alinea Analytics estimates that College Football 27 earned $6.4 million from physical PlayStation sales, while Madden NFL 27 generated $8.2 million and MLB The Show 26 earned $7.6 million through the format.

These figures suggest that strong revenue does not necessarily translate into strong physical sales. For games built around recurring online modes, digital editions and downloadable content can play a major role in how players purchase and engage with the game.

MYTEAM REWARDS MAY ENCOURAGE DIGITAL PURCHASES

One factor behind the trend is the franchise’s focus on modes such as MyTEAM, where players collect basketball stars, build lineups, and compete online. The official NBA 2K27 edition guide lists digital editions with virtual currency and additional MyTEAM and MyCAREER content, giving players incentives to spend more upfront.

These editions do not prove why each individual player chose digital, but they illustrate how bonus content can make digital purchases appealing. For players who mainly engage with online modes, downloadable content and virtual currency can be more immediately useful than owning a physical disc.

NBA 2K27’s estimated $9.9 million in physical PlayStation revenue shows that boxed games remain commercially relevant, even in a franchise where digital sales dominate. However, physical copies account for less than one-twentieth of its estimated PlayStation earnings.

Alinea Analytics estimates that new physical PlayStation releases collectively generated more than $655 million in premium revenue during 2026, representing less than 20% of revenue from new premium games. The report points to a wider divide in the market: sports titles tend to lean toward digital purchases, while several major single-player games retain higher physical sales shares.

For NBA 2K27, the key takeaway is the difference between revenue and format. The game ranks among PlayStation’s biggest new releases by estimated earnings, yet its physical sales contribute only a small portion of that success.
