Today is a great day for Indian Naruto fans. The director who brought Masashi Kishimoto’s ninja world to life is coming to India as a featured guest at Anime India Mumbai 2026.

This is one of the biggest guest announcements ever made by an Indian anime convention and shows how much India’s anime community has grown over the years. The official Anime India Instagram page announced Hayato Date’s appearance with this heartfelt message:
For two decades, one man shaped the journey of a boy who dreamed of becoming Hokage and turned it into a story that raised a generation across the world, including ours.
Who Is Hayato Date, the Director of Naruto?
Hayato Date is a veteran Japanese anime director best known for Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. He began his career as a cinematographer and assistant director before making his directorial debut with Rerere no Genius Bakabon in 1999.
In 2002, Date took over as the director of Naruto, helping turn Masashi Kishimoto’s manga into one of the most popular anime series in the world. He later served as the series director of Naruto Shippuden, overseeing nearly the entire anime from Episode 1 to Episode 479. Under his leadership, the franchise became a defining part of childhood for millions of anime fans around the globe.
Beyond Naruto, Hayato Date has directed several other anime, including Saiyuki, Tokyo Underground, and Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie.
His appearance at Anime India Mumbai 2026 makes him one of the biggest anime directors ever invited to an Indian convention. He follows Tetsuro Araki, the director of Attack on Titan, who was the headline guest at Anime India’s first Mumbai event in 2025.
How Anime India Is Growing the Anime Community Across India
The first Anime India Mumbai event, held from August 22 to 24, 2025, attracted more than 29,000 fans, making it one of India’s biggest anime conventions and proving that the country’s anime community is stronger than ever.
Following its successful debut, Anime India expanded across the country in 2026 with events in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. Each convention featured well-known guests from the anime industry. Haikyu!! Director Susumu Mitsunaka attended the Kolkata event, while legendary voice actor Kazuhiko Inoue, best known as the voice of Kakashi Hatake in Naruto and Yoriichi Tsugikuni in Demon Slayer, headlined the Delhi edition.
Now, Anime India Mumbai 2026 is raising the bar once again with the arrival of Hayato Date, one of the most influential directors in anime history.
