The second season of one of the most popular TV shows this year has just received a major update from one of its stars. Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Yoshii Toranaga in the hit FX series ‘Shōgun,’ recently shared some exciting news about Season 2 in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The show debuted earlier this year to fantastic reviews and growing viewership, even earning a record 25 Emmy nominations. Although the first season covered James Clavell’s novel completely, ‘Shōgun’ will continue with at least two more seasons on FX and Hulu. Sanada gave a brief but hopeful update about Season 2’s progress and mentioned when filming might start:
Uncharted Territory for “Shōgun” Season 2
“We have a writers room, and they’re working every day. Hopefully sometime next year, we can begin shooting.”
‘Shōgun’ has an almost perfect 99% rating from critics and a 92% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The show has been compared to a Samurai version of the early seasons of Game of Thrones. Besides Sanada, ‘Shōgun’ stars Anna Sawai, who was also in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ and played Elle in ‘F9: The Fast Saga.’
Cosmo Jarvis plays John Blackthorne, the English sailor who arrives in Japan and becomes a trusted Toranaga team member. The cast also includes Tadanobu Asano, Yûki Kedôin, Akiko Kobayashi, Eushin Lee, Takehiro Hira, and Yuki Kura. The series was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks.
Recently, Sanada shared more details about Season 2, saying that half of the characters from Season 1 will return, while the other half will be new and original. As ‘Shōgun’ moves from adapting a novel to becoming an original series, it will face new challenges.
However, given the high quality of the first season and the returning stars like Sanada, the future of ‘Shōgun’ looks promising, even without a novel to base it on.
Season 2 of ‘Shōgun’ does not have an official release date yet, but it is expected to be a few years away. Stay tuned to Otakukart for more updates and watch all episodes of ‘Shōgun’ on Hulu.
