Discovery’s historical documentary series, Mysteries Of The Abandoned: Hidden America Season 2 will be coming out with episode 4 this week. This time, we’ll be diving back in time to the Orangeburg Massacre, a devastating incident that happened in 1968.
After managing to intrigue viewers with its first season, Mysteries of the Abandoned: Hidden America started airing its second season in August 2023. A spin-off of the original series, Hidden America takes us through various deserted and obsolete areas that were once responsible for hosting significant events in America’s history.
With Kasper Michaels as the narrator, we’ve managed to explore places like the Charity Hospital, Oklahoma’s Ghost Town, and, most recently, Pullman Town in Chicago. Hidden America’s season 2 has two more episodes left for us now, so it’s going to be interesting to see what we’ll be traveling to virtually next.
Mysteries Of The Abandoned Hidden America Season 2 Episode 3: Recap
In Episode 3 of Hidden America, the show featured an insightful short documentary of Pullman, located adjacent to Lake Calumet. Now mostly a landmark and a Historical Park, Pullman was once responsible for housing hundreds of employees who worked for George Pullman,
Although the place was first appreciated for its employment opportunities without any basis, the workers, especially African Americans, had to go through discrimination frequently. However, this wasn’t the reason for Pullman’s downfall; it was when it started charging its citizens, its employees, much higher for rent without ever increasing their salaries.
The higher charges came as a result of the Panic of 1893, after which Pullman cars were sadly not as popular as they were before. To cope with this loss, Pullman decided to reduce employee salaries while simultaneously increasing the cost of living in the neighborhood.
After many days of suffering, some of the overworked and underpaid employees started the Pullman Strike in 1894. Things were so chaotic that even the military and government had to be involved to ease the tense situation in Pullman.
Dr. Sascha Auerbach, an expert in the history of Pullman, was also called on the series to explain more about what went down in the 19th century Pullman. The eerily empty town has now been turned into a historical site, where anyone can view the neighborhood’s history at its museum.
Besides Pullman, Chicago, half of the episode talked about the Letchworth Village, made by William Letchworth. Brought into existence as a home and safe place for the mentally ill, Letchworth Village was an ambitious project that made sense and was built with positive hopes.
Due to less funding and insufficient care, Letchworth Village became anything but what it was originally meant for. Reports of physical, mental, and sexual abuse became a common occurrence in the institution. After being shut down in 1996, the Letchworth village is now an obsolete place that anyone seldom visits.
