Kohei Horikoshi’s first major original manga since My Hero Academia continues to make a strong impression weeks after its release. Quit Laughing, Shijima, a special one-shot written and illustrated by the acclaimed manga creator, debuted on August 9, 2026, and remains among the most popular titles on official manga platforms.
The new story marks Horikoshi’s return to creating a completely new world after the conclusion of My Hero Academia. VIZ Media describes the release as a special one-shot from “The creator of My Hero Academia,” while also confirming that it is available to read officially.
Quit Laughing, Shijima Continues to Trend Weeks After Release
Despite being a standalone 60-page story, Quit Laughing, Shijima has maintained strong reader interest beyond its initial launch period. The manga was reported to have ranked second among the hottest titles and first on the trending list on Manga Plus, demonstrating the continued demand for Horikoshi’s first major new project after My Hero Academia.
The one-shot takes Horikoshi in a different creative direction, combining horror elements with a new world, distinct characters, and an original power system. Its darker tone also separates it from the superhero setting that made My Hero Academia a global phenomenon.

The story’s conclusion has generated discussion among readers because its world and characters appear capable of supporting a much longer narrative. However, neither Horikoshi nor Shueisha has confirmed plans for a serialization, meaning any continuation remains speculative for now.
Horikoshi also celebrated his return to Weekly Shonen Jump with a brief author comment, saying,
“I’m so happy to be in Jump! Drawing was so fun! Hope you enjoy it!”

For now, Quit Laughing, Shijima stands as a successful reminder that Horikoshi’s work continues to draw major attention even outside the world of My Hero Academia. Whether the one-shot eventually becomes a full series remains unknown, but its sustained popularity has clearly made fans eager to see more.
