The Kennedy Center Honors are honors given to individuals in arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture. They have been presented every year since 1978, usually during December, celebrating five honorees in the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C. While the awards are primarily given to individuals, they have also been awarded to musical groups or couples and also to one television show and one Broadway musical.
The Kennedy Center Honors were created by George Stevens Jr. along with Nick Vanoff and produced the first gala in 1978. He worked as a producer and co-writer through the 2014 honors, after which he sold the production rights to the Kennedy Center. The Kennedy Center Honors started in 1977, after that year’s 10th anniversary.
