CBC Smash hit the Murdoch Mysteries is a murder mystery series taking place in late 1800s Toronto and focuses on the sophisticated sleuthing of Toronto police detective William Murdoch. Murdoch uses his superior intellect and ahead of its time scientific techniques to solve high-profile murders in the provincial Canuck capital.
This show has a fairly unique premise, as it’s kind of a hybrid between Sherlock Holmes and CSI, with Detective Murdoch utilizing both early forensics and just good old-fashioned detective skills to unravel the crime.
The good detective is assisted by his heavy-handed superior Inspector Brackenreid, the city coroner Dr. Ogden, an entourage of eager young constables, and various recurring guest characters.
Recap & Review
Before diving into Murdoch Mysteries Season 17 Episode 11, let’s quickly talk about the show. This show is surprisingly entertaining and addicting for a variety of reasons. First off, each 45-minute episode has a unique and sophisticated “Who done it?” plot that’s both intriguing and very unpredictable. I enjoy the mental challenge of playing armchair Detective, as there are often multiple suspects, each with compelling motives, and it’s pretty rare that I’m able to accurately guess who the killer is until the end.
The character Murdoch has an interesting duality about him as he’s deeply religious but routinely rebukes superstition and embraces science. There’s also a romantic element to the show between Murdoch and the city coroner, Dr. Ogden. They are both wildly attracted to each other but hesitate to act on their obvious chemistry for fear of complicating their work life and jeopardizing the cases.
Since the show is a period piece, its subplot often touches on some of the social issues of that era, like religion, women’s rights, and discrimination. The show also pokes fun at itself and the trends of that time frame, with things like openly using legal cocaine like it’s aspirin, laughing at the idea that playing a sport could one day be a paying occupation, to marveling at the invention of the wireless Telegraph.
It’s also fun to see all the old-timey constable uniforms and the generally sophisticated fashion trends of that era, especially the seemingly infinite supply of ladies’ dress hats. Even the bad guys are generally wearing some degree of suit or upscale menswear, unlike modern-day criminals.
Even though this show is a murder mystery series, there’s no graphic violence, nudity, or even any swearing which would normally preclude me from watching it at all. But this show is so well written and still has plenty of action that it’s kept me, and all of Canada coming back for more for well over a decade.
Since this show is brought to us by our wacky neighbors to the north, you won’t recognize any of the actors who are all Canadian, British, or Australian. But even though they aren’t big stars here in the US, trust me, they are plenty famous in the Great White North and damn good actors.
In short, this is a charmingly entertaining series that’s both captivating and family-friendly. While there is an overarching storyline that progresses throughout the series, most of the 45-minute episodes are self-resolving and fairly independent from the rest. Now let’s discuss when Episode 11 of Murdoch Mysteries Season 17 will be released and what will happen in it.
