Morbius is an American superhero Marvel film, which premiered on April 1st, 2022. The movie centers around doctor Michael Morbius as he becomes a living vampire after curing himself of a rare disease. The film is distributed by Sony Pictures and is produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel. It is the third movie in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, SSU. Reception for the film has not been very positive, with many critics calling the film uninspired and dated. With that being said, Leto and Smith’s performances have received some praise. With the abundance of reasons not to watch the film, we are here to give 10 reasons why you should watch it.
Morbius stars Jared Leto in the titular character of Dr. Michael Morbius. Other members of the cast include Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. They play Milo Morbius, Martine Bancroft, Dr. Emil Nicholas, Alberto “Al” Rodriguez, and Simon Stroud respectively. The film received mainly negative reviews from critics.

Top 10 reasons to watch Morbius
1) It is the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe after the Venom movies
Morbius is the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe after the Venom movies. This will create a new shared universe of films inspired by Spider-Man characters beginning with Venom in 2018. This is especially good news for the fans of the Spider-Man comic out there and those who really know and have read the comics as they will be able to see many of the characters in the comics come to life on the screen.
2) Michael Keaton’s appearance questions how this non-MCU Marvel movie connects to the MCU
Michael Keaton’s appearance questions how Morbius and the other non-MCU Marvel movies connect to the MCU. This is good for Marvel fans who wish that these characters were a part of the same universe. Fans have always wanted the characters in the non-MCU Marvel films to be made a part of the MCU as well, and it looks like they are finally getting what they wished for. Morbius is a very important step in connecting the two universes together, so, even if it has not been the greatest movie, it is a necessary one for this purpose.
3) Morbius is different
The movie seems to show off a different kind of superhero/villain film, though the origin story might not be all that unique. It has a darker tone to it than anything we have seen from a Spider-Man universe, for one thing. Venom did have that potential, but it went a wackier route. Whereas, Morbius seems like it is going down a more horror route. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is meant to be the first horror MCU film, maybe Morbius will act as a precursor to what is expected of it. There is always some level of intrigue behind something different.
4) The Special Effects look good
One needs to make sure it looks good if they are going to do a movie based on supernatural elements like a vampire. The movie signals that good money was put towards the special effects of the whole thing, while there is no current word on the budget for Morbius. Like Nightcrawler of X-Men fame, there is a scene where Morbius is seemingly teleporting down a hallway. It looks very good. The same goes for almost every shot of the movie. One also cannot help but get a little excited at the crazy look of Morbius looking like an actual vampire.
5) His Powers are cool
A film usually needs substance and great character work to succeed. This is why the MCU is so successful, as we have grown to love the characters beyond their abilities. However, there is something to appreciate about watching a character who can flat-out do cool things. Morbius seems to be able to do a handful of such cool things. There is the enhanced strength, speed, and agility that comes with his change, his use of echolocation, and the aforementioned possible teleportation. However, there is also the struggle that usually comes with the urge to consume human blood.

6) Jared Leto is Great
When it comes to Jared Leto, 2016’s Suicide Squad seemed to leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Compared to Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger’s award-winning work as the character, his portrayal of the Joker was not well received and looks even worse compared to theirs. That being said, Leto is in fact a fantastic actor. He is willing to go the extra mile for a role and is notably a method actor. We know for a fact that he lost all of the weight in real life that Morbius needed to look sick. He has also won an Academy Award for 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club. Even though this is not an Oscar-bait role, Leto has given it his all.
7) MCU Connections
Interesting things for Spider-Man were afoot with the controversial Sony/Disney split. However, it looks like we are already seeing the effects of the sides ultimately reconciling. There seem to be a few things that connect this Sony Universe with the MCU, along with Spidey remaining with the MCU. There is a shot of Spider-Man with the word “murderer” written across it, for starters. This could be a reference to the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home. As mentioned before, there is also the appearance of Michael Keaton, who played the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He is seen wearing the same prison jumpsuit from that movie. We are very excited to see where this whole thing goes.
8) It is familiar
I know many viewers and critics are saying that they have grown weary of the typical origin tales. This is mainly why the film has received negative reviews, as viewers and critics claim they have grown tired of the same old thing. They of course do have a point. However, there is something familiar and relaxing to knowing exactly where the story is leading. There is a reason people still choose to watch Hallmark movies when they just want to switch off their brains and not think about what they watching. It is because all Hallmark movies are exactly the same. This same thought can be applied to Morbius as well. Besides, we need to know the origin of a superhero to see where he goes from there.
9) Sony’s History
Yes, Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 both killed their respective franchises by trying to do too much. However, viewers seem to be forgetting that Spider-Man 2 is still considered one of the best superhero films of all time, and let us not forget Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse, which one an Academy Awards and is probably my favorite Spider-Man movie ever.
So, Sony definitely does not make only bad Spider-Man movies. However, we do agree that there are some surefire missteps, especially in terms of working as part of a universe. Sony does not have a good track record with it, but it is something that the MCU has mastered. That being said, we think Morbius is a good start to getting it back on track. Do not get us wrong, we are not saying that Morbius is on the level of Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse or even Spider-Man 2 for that matter, comparing it to these two movies seems a bit unfair to be honest. But, it is not half bad.
10) Universe Building
The whole point of Morbius is to build onto Sony’s Spider-Man Universe or SSU. Though Sony does not have the best track record with building a universe, Morbius is not a bad start. It is the third movie in this universe after the two Venom movies, and we see an anti-hero theme running here. I for one am not too mad about it. We think Morbius fits in well in this universe they are building and they have not tried to do too much, too soon. Some would say they played it too safe this time perhaps not taking any new risks at all, but what that does is makes something that is not too bad.
We would love to watch Morbius and Venom fight side by side and maybe we will even get that in the future. Overall, Morbius as the movie is perfectly fine and is worth a one-time watch for a weekend at the movies with friends. I know it is not exactly a ringing endorsement, but Morbius is not terrible.
