Monster Hunter Wilds players will receive weapon adjustments and new combat actions without purchasing the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion. CAPCOM Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka confirmed the plans during an interview with Wccftech at Tokyo Game Show 2026, explaining that several gameplay improvements will be available to existing players through a free update.
The update will accompany the expansion’s release in 2027. While Ascendance will introduce paid content such as Master Rank quests and the new Boost Bracer mechanic, CAPCOM intends to make the announced weapon changes and other improvements accessible to players who own only the base game.
In the Wccftech interview, Fujioka clarified the distinction between the expansion’s exclusive features and the improvements coming to Wilds. He said that weapon adjustments and new actions would be available even to players who do not purchase Ascendance.
CAPCOM IS IMPROVING EXISTING WEAPONS INSTEAD OF ADDING A 15TH
The development team is focusing on refining the 14 existing weapon types rather than introducing another weapon in Ascendance. Fujioka explained that CAPCOM evaluates new weapon concepts for every major entry, but only adds one when it offers a sufficiently different playstyle from the existing options.
Director Takuro Hiraoka also confirmed that some weapons will receive adjustments, while others will gain new actions. Sword and Shield, for example, will receive a new technique. The changes are intended to expand combat options while preserving the distinct identity of each weapon.

This approach means players can benefit from the combat improvements without paying for the expansion. It also gives returning hunters new ways to approach battles with their preferred weapons.
The Boost Bracer is one of the major additions exclusive to Ascendance. Hunters build energy by attacking monsters and can activate Boost to strengthen certain moves, access additional actions, and create openings during combat. According to CAPCOM’s official PlayStation Blog announcement, the mechanic is designed to enhance the strengths of all 14 weapon types.
However, the free update will also include quality-of-life improvements, such as a revamped user interface and the ability to switch weapons without mounting a Seikret. The new Master Rank quests and Boost Bracer content will still require purchasing Ascendance, so the update will not provide the entire expansion for free.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also planned. The free update will give existing players access to the announced weapon improvements when the expansion arrives.
