Nintendo and Mojang Studios have confirmed that existing Minecraft Nintendo Switch players can move to the native Nintendo Switch 2 version, with digital owners receiving a limited-time opportunity to claim the Standard Edition at no additional cost.

The offer gives players who already own the digital Nintendo Switch version until January 31, 2027, to secure the Switch 2 upgrade through the Nintendo eShop in most territories.

The native version of Minecraft is scheduled to launch on October 27, 2026, bringing a significant visual upgrade alongside features designed specifically for Nintendo’s newer hardware.

MINECRAFT SWITCH 2 UPGRADE IS FREE UNTIL JANUARY 31, 2027

According to Nintendo’s official Minecraft Switch 2 announcement, players who already own the digital Nintendo Switch version can pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2 Standard Edition for free until the end of January 2027. The offer is available in most territories, although Nintendo notes that Japan and Taiwan have separate pricing arrangements.

Players can also move to the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection at a discounted price instead of taking the free Standard Edition. Nintendo’s announcement confirms the offer is limited-time, meaning eligible players should claim the upgrade before the January 31 deadline.

Nintendo’s current information specifically refers to owners of the digital Nintendo Switch version. The company has not announced an equivalent free upgrade path for players who own the physical Switch release, so physical owners should not assume they qualify.

The biggest technical addition is Vibrant Visuals, which Mojang describes as Minecraft’s largest official visual enhancement. The feature introduces improved lighting, shadows, reflections, and atmospheric effects, giving environments more depth while retaining the game’s recognizable block-based art style.

Mojang’s Switch 2 announcement also confirms that existing Nintendo Switch worlds can be carried over to Switch 2. This allows players to continue their existing creations rather than starting a new world.

The Switch 2 release will additionally include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, which receives Vibrant Visuals support. The pack features a Mario-themed world, music, and character skins inspired by Nintendo’s iconic franchise.

Vibrant Visuals will not be available in every situation, including split-screen play and certain Marketplace content. Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, 2026.
