MBS has announced that it will produce a live-action series adaptation of Saburo Nagai’s manga Smells Like Green Spirit, set to debut on September 19 in the Dramafil programming block.
The series, starring Towa Araki as the main character Futoshi Mishima, will be aired on multiple channels, including MBS and TV Kanagawa on September 19, TV Saitama on September 23, Gunma TV on September 24, Tochigi TV on September 25, and Chiba TV on September 26.
The story, set in a rural town during the Heisei era, revolves around Mishima, who has been bullied for his appearance and secretly cross-dresses as a way to cope.
The plot thickens when Mishima discovers Kirino, the leader of his bullies, attempting to use the same lipstick Mishima had lost.
This discovery takes place on the school rooftop, where Mishima sees Kirino trying to apply the lipstick to himself.
The series explores the complex relationship between Mishima and Kirino, as well as the struggles Mishima faces in dealing with his identity in a conservative environment.
Ikuko Sawada will direct the series, while Yūka Arai is responsible for writing the script, ensuring that the adaptation stays true to the manga’s themes and characters.
The original manga by Saburō Nagai was published between 2011 and 2012 in *Comic Be* magazine, consisting of two volumes titled Side:A and Side:B.
The manga has a spinoff series called Shintan Kairō, which was extended to five volumes. Nagai is also known for another work, Boys, Be Ambitious!, which was published in English by SuBLime in 2013, showcasing Nagai’s talent for creating engaging stories that resonate with readers.
