Warner Bros. has announced the release of the first anime film adaptation of the Lord of the Rings series, titled The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim.
The trailer, revealed on August 22, 2024, provides a preview of the intense battle between Rohan’s kingdom, led by Héra, and the Dunlendings, commanded by Wulf.
This highly anticipated film will make an appearance at New York Comic Con (NYCC) from October 17-20, 2024, with more details expected to be announced soon.
The movie is set to hit U.S. theaters on December 13, 2024, and will be released internationally on December 11, 2024.
The film, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, known for Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Eden of the East, features a notable voice cast including Gaia Wise as Héra, Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, and Miranda Otto as Éowyn and narrator.
Executive producers for the project include Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with Sam Register, Carolyn Blackwood, and Toby Emmerich.
The film is produced by Philippa Boyens, who worked on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, alongside Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou.
Set 183 years before the events of the original Lord of the Rings films, The War of Rohirrim explores the history of Helm Hammerhand and his house.
The story centers on the defense of the Hornburg fortress, later known as Helm’s Deep, as Helm’s daughter Héra leads the fight against Wulf, who seeks revenge for his father’s death.
Kamiyama highlighted the film’s strong female lead and its representation of women through the character of Héra and the narration by Éowyn, aiming to offer a fresh perspective on Tolkien’s world.
