Things get messy in Kingstown. Season 3, Episode 3, Barbarians at the Gate, throws a wrench into the usual power struggle. While violence has always been part of the show, this episode feels different. It seems like things might actually change this time.
We pick up right after the terrible murder of Tatiana. Mike, furious, confronts his new enemy, the Russian gangster Konstantin. We learn some awful details about the murder, making it even more horrific. Mike doesn’t hold back – he gets physical with Konstantin’s men.
Konstantin retaliates by sending someone to kill Mike. A car chase and a brutal fight scene follow, with Mike winning. Jeremy Renner shows he’s fully recovered from his injuries and throws himself into this physically demanding episode.
But the fight isn’t the only challenge Mike faces. He gets scolded by his friend Ian for acting without thinking. A conversation with Bunny brings up Mike’s dark past with a white supremacist group. On top of all that, Mike discovers the other new threat, Callahan, is someone he already knows!
Usually stuck in the background, Ian gets more to do here. He confronts Mike about his actions but also shows a softer side when trying to help Iris get out of jail. What seemed like a random storyline takes a turn.
Iris’ arrest leads Ian to discover a secret she’s been hiding, even from Mike. We don’t find out what it is yet, but it adds to the drama. We also learn that Iris knows Konstantin from the back East and has a reason to be loyal to Mike.
