The last couple of episodes were intense, fast-paced, and full of drama. As the show draws to a conclusion, each week, a contestant or two is going home, and only the best remain.
The regional teaming is done; now it is every chef for themselves, and in these episodes, we saw how individual work impacts them on their path to winning this reality competition show.
From military rations and improvisation to back talk and post-elimination interview drama, we can’t say that this new regional approach that MasterChef is taking is boring.
Quite the opposite, not only does it bring a new style to the show, making you root for a team coming from a different region, but you also get to see during regional teaming how each cook can bring something to the table to enhance a plate, either with a seasoning, technique or cooking style.
So, what went down in the last couple of episodes? Come with us to find out.
MasterChef Season 13 Episode 11 & 12 Recap
MasterChef’s last two episodes were very intense, with a double elimination that we need to unpack. Firstly, Chef Andre Rush from Kitchen Commando joined as a guest judge to see the participants compete in a Mystery Box Challenge with army rations.
They had to cook a three-course meal; as of these episodes, there are no more regional teams, and everyone is on their own. The best dishes were cooked by Brynn, Grant, and Kolby. Among the winners, the one granted immunity was Grant. The bottom cooks with the worst dishes were Nina, Charles, and Wayne.
The ones left had to face a tag team challenge. Grant had immunity but had to participate, and he chose the teams. They must cook a three-course meal.
Teamings were done in Team Blue and Team Maroon. Team Maroon won, and with that victory, they had two immunity pins. The best cook was MD, followed by Sav Miles. And the bottom two were Charles and Jennifer.
Who Got Sent Home?
This is the drama part that makes MasterChef a bit saucy and fun to watch. Nina Interlandi Bell and Charles Calvino were sent home; Nina, in the post-elimination interview, sounded a little salty, and who couldn’t blame her? She considers that the Military Ration challenge was tricky, if not rigged.
All in all, it seems like a bad excuse for not knowing how to deliver a dish under tough circumstances with ingredients you are not dominant or proficient at working with. But that’s how the cookie crumbles in MasterChef.

MasterChef Season 13 Episode 11 & 12 Review
MasterChef’s last couple of episodes mixed things up a bit amidst a season that already had mixed it up a bit with that regional teaming up of the contestants.
I can understand why they went with the regional blend; not only does it bring new aspects to a tried and true successful show and franchise that’s spawned regional and international spinoffs, but it also is fresh to see which region and its representatives in the competition can bring out their A-game.
As for the episodes, the thing is that a Mystery Challenge is always a mystery. It is true that chefs have to improvise and bring out their best, but I sort of concur with Nina Interlandi when it comes to the comment of expressing that military rations are a bit too much.
In any case, her saltiness after elimination doesn’t make up for the fact that she actually didn’t deliver a good plate, and that’s the gist of the show: Either you cook to the taste of the judge, or you don’t.
It can be subjective, and it can be biased, and since we’re not there to smell or eat the dish, we can’t say if our tastebuds will pass better judgment than Gordon Ramsay’s.
Each week, the show keeps narrowing it down and brings up new and more exciting things; we’ll have to see how the rest of the remaining competitors do in the next challenges.
