Marvel’s Wonder Man cancellation came as a surprise to fans, especially after Disney+ had previously indicated that the series would continue. Now, showrunner and co-creator Andrew Guest has addressed the decision, revealing that Season 2 was not abandoned because of scheduling conflicts or a hidden marketing strategy.
In a statement shared on TikTok, Guest explained that the team behind the Marvel Television series was ready to begin production before an internal decision at Disney and Marvel changed its direction. According to Guest, the cancellation happened despite the cast and creative team wanting to continue Simon Williams’ story.
Wonder Man Season 2 Was Planned Before Marvel Changed Course
Andrew Guest clarified that reports suggesting Wonder Man was canceled because of availability issues involving director Destin Daniel Cretton or star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II were incorrect. He emphasized that everyone involved was committed to returning for another season.
“This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and [Destin Daniel Cretton’s] schedule and no one’s schedule was an issue,”
Guest said, addressing speculation surrounding the cancellation.
The showrunner added that Marvel had already made significant preparations for the next chapter of the series.
“Yahya, Destin, Sir Ben and I all loved making this show. All felt passionately about continuing to do it, and were eager to. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared,”
he explained.
Guest also revealed that the production timeline was already taking shape before the cancellation decision.
“The writers’ room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year,”
he said.
According to Guest, the decision came from within Disney and Marvel after circumstances changed.
“There was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did,”
he stated.
The cancellation followed earlier reports that Disney+ had reversed plans for a second season of Wonder Man. The series starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a struggling actor who becomes connected to the superhero world, alongside Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery.
The first season also featured actors including X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, and Olivia Thirlby. Destin Daniel Cretton, known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, served as co-creator alongside Guest and directed the opening episode.
Abdul-Mateen II previously reacted to the cancellation on social media, writing that “everything will shake out” after the news broke. While Wonder Man will not receive a second season, the first season remains available on Disney+.
