Mark Ruffalo has strongly rejected accusations of antisemitism after Paramount Skydance criticized his remarks about the company’s proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The actor called the accusation “appalling and fundamentally dishonest” while defending his criticism of Oracle, the Israeli government and the Ellison family.
The dispute began after Ruffalo shared a post criticizing Oracle’s business relationship with Israel and linking those concerns to Larry Ellison’s financial support for his son David Ellison, the chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance. Ruffalo also argued that the planned Warner Bros. merger could have serious consequences for jobs, competition and editorial independence.
According to NBC News, Paramount responded by saying it was
“troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute.”
The studio also argued that applying terms such as “genocide” and “apartheid” to a corporate transaction was “a bridge too far.”
Mark Ruffalo Rejects Paramount’s Antisemitism Accusation
Ruffalo responded on X by directly addressing the accusation against him.
“The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest,”
he wrote, adding that criticizing political leaders, military technology contracts or the executives involved in such businesses
“is not the same as criticizing Jewish people.”
The actor said his criticism was directed at specific political and corporate actions rather than Jewish people as a group. He also stated that his views should not be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people and emphasized his respect for Jewish friends, colleagues and loved ones.
Ruffalo has also argued that the Paramount-Warner Bros. deal deserves greater public scrutiny because of the media assets that would come under a single corporate structure. In his response, he raised concerns about editorial freedom, employment and the influence of Oracle-related business interests.
The actor wrote that scrutiny of
“the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families” was “fair and necessary.”
He further claimed that the merger would place CNN, HBO and Warner Bros. under the control of one family, while also questioning the role of foreign financing in the transaction.
Paramount Merger Dispute Draws Wider Industry Reaction
The controversy has brought renewed attention to the proposed Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery deal, which remains subject to legal and regulatory scrutiny. Ruffalo has been among the entertainment figures publicly opposing the merger, arguing that further media consolidation could hurt workers and reduce competition.
Paramount has defended the transaction and has rejected the suggestion that its planned acquisition should be viewed through the political lens used by Ruffalo. The company has said it does not tolerate prejudice and wants the deal to be judged on its legal merits rather than what it describes as inflammatory rhetoric.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center also supported Paramount’s position, while the Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt was among those who criticized Ruffalo’s remarks. Meanwhile, fellow actor John Cusack publicly expressed solidarity with Ruffalo following the dispute.
The disagreement is therefore now extending beyond the proposed merger itself. At its center is a broader argument over where legitimate criticism of governments, corporations and business executives ends and antisemitic rhetoric begins, with Ruffalo continuing to insist that his comments were political and corporate criticism, not an attack on Jewish people.
