Mare Fuori, popularly known by its international English title – ‘The Sea Beyond,’ returned with a third installment of the mega-hit series in 2023 after the first season and second seasons were released in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Co-created by Cristina Farina and Maurizio Careddu, ‘The Sea Beyond’ is a crime drama with a passionate love story and also explores more on the variety of psychological dilemmas plaguing the characters.
Based on the lives of young criminals detained in a juvenile penitentiary, Mare Fuori highlights their different backgrounds and illustrates the chemistry forming inside the prison walls, with angst, camaraderie, rivalry, and romance. The drama has been shot in multiple beautiful locations like Pier San Vincenzo with beautifully casted characters and provides a visual feast to the viewers.
Mare Fuori- The Story Premise
A Nepolitan Cammora that is, an Italian mafia family’s son, Carmine Di Salvo, who desperately wishes to escape the clutches of his dishonest background to earn an upright living by achieving his dream of becoming a hairdresser and Fillipo Ferari, a prodigal pianist son of a rich, socialite family get arrested in Naples on the same day.
Though they have nothing in the slightest common, together, they are brought into the juvenile detention center in Naples. They become the targets of bullying by Ciro Ricci, son of an old crime syndicate’s boss and self-established ‘top-dog’ amongst the juvenile inmates.
Also present in this mixed crowd of near adult offenders is a young girl named Naditza, who has repeatedly broken laws and committed crimes to get arrested and be put away from her violent, abusive family. Bonds form, and spark fly as the characters meet and interact.
In the juvenile prison center, the director of the establishment- Paola Vinci, an educator by the name of Beppe Romano, and a police commander, Massimo Esposito, attempt through their different approaches to change the mindset of the young criminals and offer them a better chance at living honestly in the open world.

Mare Fuori Season 3 Episode 11- ‘A friendship is forever’
The third season of Mare Fuori concentrates much focus on Edoardo, who is a staunch supporter of the Camorra. Edoardo lands in the hospital with grave injuries, leaving his mother and Carmela devastated. Liz regrets hosting Edoardo, and tensions rise between the characters as two opposing factions form inside the juvenile detention center.
Suspicions and doubts are wracking up, creating layers of unraveled mystery, tying the characters with a blindfold, and Carmine approaches Rose to reconcile with her. Relations between Di Salvo and Ricci sour further, and the power dynamics fluctuate and shift within the prison. Edoardo’s condition worsens as he needs an urgent blood transfusion, and Teresa is the only one compatible with his blood type.
Mare Fuori Season 3 Episode 11- ‘The choice‘
Filipino and Carmine share an emotional farewell as the former prepares to transfer to a juvenile prison in Beccaria, Milan. Wanda is understanding but still warns Carmine about his feelings for Rosa because of the ongoing clan war, and Rosa visits Edoardo in the hospital with Don Salvatore. However, Carmela is less than please with the latter’s presence and scolds him, accusing him of letting their family and Edoardo down by betraying them.
This incident has a big impact on Rosa as she begins to believe Carmela. Filipe leaves after greeting everyone, even imagining the absentees’ presence. Giulia is met by a new cellmate, and Rosa sneaks out to meet Carmine but is followed by Don Salvatore, who forces a gun into her hand and asks her to choose between who gets to live- his father or Carmine. Strained, Rosa places the gun at her forehead, and a shot goes off.
