Wolfgang Van Halen, who used to play bass in the band Van Halen, has a new music project called MAMMOTH WVH. They just released their second album called “II” and celebrated it by appearing on the NBC News show “Today” on Thursday, August 3rd. They played two songs from the album: a slow song called “Waiting” at 8 in the morning, and a shorter version of their upcoming song “I’m Alright” at 9 in the morning.
Just last week, MAMMOTH WVH put out a new music video for their song “I’m Alright”. The video continues the story from their previous video ” Another Celebration At The End Of The World”, where the old members of Wolfgang’s band, who were let go from MAMMOTH WVH, formed their own group called MAMMOTH WWW.
In the new video, both MAMMOTH WVH and MAMMOTH WWW participate in a “Battle of the Bands”. MAMMOTH WVH overhears MAMMOTH WWW participating in “I’m Alright” and decides to use that song for themselves, leading to some surprising and unexpected outcomes.

Their headline tour will start on November 4, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and go until December 9 when they finish up in Los Angeles. Along the way, they will be stopping in cities like Chicago, Illinois (November 9), Sayreville, New Jersey (November 17); Dallas Texas (November 25); and Seattle, Washington (December 3).
The tour will also feature Nita Strauss as the main support act. Additionally, they will still be opening for METALLICA on November 3 in St. Louis and November 10 in Detroit as part of their earlier announced dates.
“Mammoth II” came out on August 4 through BMG. This album has 10 songs on it and was recorded at the famous 5150 studio. Wolfgang’s close friend and collaborator, Michael “Elvis” Baskette, worked on producing the album.
What does Wolfgang have to say about his new release?
Keeping up with the tradition, Wolfgang continued to write all the songs and play all the instruments and sing on his own for “Mammoth II”. He aimed to challenge himself by creating a sound that goes beyond what people already knew about him.
“Right?” is the starting song of the album and finishes with a fading-out ending like The Beatles’ style in the song “Better Than You”. The song “Mammoth II” explains how Wolfgang has improved as a songwriter, musician, and singer. Each song, like “Like a Pastime”, “Take a Bow”, or ‘Waiting”, has its own special sound, highlighting Wolfgang Van Halen’s creative skills and the unique character of MAMMOTH WVH.
Wolfgang talked about the song “I’m Alright” fitting with the album’s release. The video continues the story from the videos “Don’t Back Down” and “Another Celebration At the End of The World”. He finds it interesting that even though the lyrics show anger, the music feels like easygoing rock. It is funny how this song became like a theme for him, about standing up for what he believes is right, instead of doing what others want. This song really captures that feeling.
In November 2020, Wolfgang talked with his dad and got permission to use the name MAMMOTH WVH for his own project. This name is important because it honors their family’s past. In 1974, when David Lee Roth joined Eddie and Alex Van Halen’s band as the singer, they named the band “MAMMOTH”.
