Rebellion Revival Includes an Exclusive Preview

Instead of releasing the opening scenes online, the production team has chosen to debut them in theaters. Audiences attending the revival screening of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion will be able to watch approximately the first five minutes of Walpurgisnacht: Rising after the main feature.

The Rebellion revival begins on August 14, 2026, and will run for two weeks in Japanese theaters. Some locations will also offer Dolby Cinema screenings, giving viewers an enhanced theatrical experience. This is not the first time the franchise has used theater-exclusive content to promote a new release. In 2024, an alternate version of the movie’s second trailer was also shown exclusively during Rebellion screenings before becoming available online.

Original Staff Return for the Sequel

The upcoming film reunites many of the creators behind the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime. Akiyuki Shinbo returns as general director, while Gen Urobuchi once again handles the screenplay. Yukihiro Miyamoto directs the film, with original character designs by Ume Aoki. Studio Shaft is also back to produce the animation, maintaining the visual style that has defined the franchise since its debut.

The movie’s theme song, “Kanata,” is performed by FictionJunction, with music composed by Yuki Kajiura, whose soundtrack has become one of the series’ signature elements.
