Anime fans have another reason to look forward to Look Back. The live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s acclaimed one-shot manga has released a new main trailer and poster while confirming its September 11 theatrical debut in Japan. The latest update also introduces several new supporting cast members, who will join Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita in bringing one of Fujimoto’s most beloved stories to the big screen.
New Cast Members Expand the World of Look Back
The latest trailer introduces several new cast members who will help bring the world of Look Back to life. Masaki Suda joins the film as Weekly Shonen Jump editor Maeda, while Kankuro Kudo plays Fujino and Kyomoto’s elementary school teacher, Tamai. The supporting cast also includes Kayo Noro as Fujino’s mother, Shuri, Ryo Ikeda as her father, Nishi, Miyu Sasaki as her older sister, Megumi, and Maho Yamada as middle school teacher, Manabe.
These additions expand the story beyond its two main characters, Fujino and Kyomoto, who are played by Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita. The supporting characters highlight the family, school, and professional relationships that shape the two young manga artists as they pursue their dreams.
The production team also confirmed that the live-action film will have a runtime of 99 minutes. That makes it significantly longer than the 58-minute animated adaptation released in 2024, giving director Hirokazu Kore-eda more time to explore the emotional journey of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s beloved one-shot.
The Lead Cast Shares Their Love for the Manga
Aju Makita has revealed that her connection to Look Back began long before filming started. According to the actress, Kore-eda introduced her to the manga years ago and expressed his hope of adapting it into a live-action film. She said she was deeply inspired by the determination of Fujino and Kyomoto as they continue chasing their dreams despite facing setbacks.

Natsuki Deguchi has shared similar feelings about the project. She described the story as an emotional journey about two young creators who support one another while pursuing their passion for manga. That message has resonated with many readers since the one-shot was first published.
The enthusiasm from both lead actresses has reassured fans that the adaptation is being made with genuine respect for Fujimoto’s original work. Their appreciation for the characters and story reflects the same emotional connection that has made Look Back a favorite among manga readers worldwide.
