The thought of being snatched away from your family only to be adopted by a white family is terrifying, to say the least, and that is the concept the ongoing drama-thriller series Little Birds is based on. Directed by Zoe Leigh Hopkins and Elle Maika Tailfeathers, the Little Bird series focuses on the sixties scoop that happened in Canada, following which the welfare authorities of the country were given permission to take away children from indigenous families for white families to adopt them.
Little Bird showcased the reality of trauma, pain, and suffering the adopted children have to go through alongside their parent’s grief of losing their children forever. Created by Jenifer Podemski and Hannah Moscovitch, while Darell Dennis and Shannon Masters wrote the captivating storyline for Little Birds.
Little Birds has been made in the form of a mockumentary, and it is definitely worth a watch for viewers interested in knowing the history of one of their nation’s policies and the effect it had on millions of people.
Produced by Catherine Bainbridge and Tanya Brunel, Little Bird’s lead cast consists of Janet Kidder playing the role of Jeannie, Alanna Bale playing the role of Adele, Ellyn Jade playing the role of Patti, Darla Contois playing the role of Bezhig Little Bird, Keris Hope Hill playing the role of Young Bezhig, Osawa Muskwa playing the role of Morris Little Bird and Darren Ross playing the role of a police officer.
