According to Leslie Jones, friends should always protect their friends from getting hit at awards shows.
She got really angry when she was watching the 2022 Oscars on TV, and her good friend Chris Rock got slapped by Will Smith. She was so mad that she even considered getting in her car and going there. She was furious for many reasons.
In Leslie Jones’s upcoming memoir called “Leslie F*cking Jones”, which comes out on September 19th, she talks about when she first met Chris Rock in the mid-90s. She also writes about how, as she had a hard time finding success in standup comedy, she and Chris Rock became really good friends over the years.
Leslie Jones considers Chris Rock as his brother
Jones describes him as being like a brother to her. He is the one who suggested that she audition for Saturday Night Live (SNL) back in 2013. At first, she did not think it was a good idea and even questioned if th people on SNL were real comedians. But he told her to stop talking and said she sounded foolish.
Rock wrote the introduction to her new book. Jones says that he is always there to offer her great advice when she needs it.

But in March 2022, she remembers wanting to support him during a difficult time. She was really angry for a while after the unexpected slap incident. She explained that Chris Rock had just made a joke, and she knew Will Smith. She thought that Smith should have handled the situation better, especially since it happened at the Oscars when the world was watching.
When Leslie Jones talked to Chris Rock about the incident, she asked him why he did not run when he stood up. She told him that if it were her, she would have hurried around the stage saying “Will calm down. Jada, call your man!”
What does Leslie Jones say about the aftermath of the incident?
Leslie Jones felt that the way things unfolded after the incident could have been improved. She thought that Will Smith had a chance to make things right, especially when he returned to the stage to accept his Best Actor award. According to her, Smith should have acknowledged his mistake and taken responsibility by saying something like “I shouldn’t have done that. Bring Chris back. I can not accept the Oscar right now because that was f—ing wrong”.
Being a close friend of Chris Rock, Jones shared that the incident had a deeper impact on him than most people might understand. She stressed that it was a humiliating ordeal for him and left a lasting impact. Jones also noted that Rock’s daughters and parents were present when it happened, and he had to undergo counseling with his daughters to help them deal with what occurred.
Leslie Jones pointed out that a positive result of the incident was that Chris Rock used his pain to create comedy. She noted that some people did not like the fact that he performed a comedy special, especially “Selective Outrage”, which debuted on Netflix in March. She clarified that comedians often use their personal feelings and experiences to create humor on stage, especially in response to challenging situations. She also expressed appreciation for the stage as a platform where they can freely express themselves.
