It was a sad day indeed as Australian folk star Judith Durham passed away. The late artist rose to fame in 1962 after joining The Seekers as the band’s lead vocalist. She was 79 years old. The devastating news was further confirmed by Musicoast Pty. Ltd. and Universal Music Australia, as they announced the tragic news through a joint statement posted via The Seeker’s official Facebook group.
In 1962, Durham became a member of The Seekers, which went on to become her breakthrough move as she soon transformed into an international star! Durham departed from the group in 1968 to pursue a solo career and released several albums but later reunited with The Seekers in the 1990s.
Fellow Surviving Members Pay Their Heartfelt Tribute
As the statement stated that after a brief stay in the Alfred Hospital, Judith was admitted to Palliative Care on Friday 5 August, where she passed away peacefully that evening. The statement further added that her death was a result of complications from long-standing chronic lung disease. Durham’s beloved sister Beverley Sheehan also paid her heartfelt tribute as she talked about the bond they shared during their lifetime while adding how Judith’s joy for life, her constant optimism, creativity, and generosity of spirit were always an inspiration to her. Anthony Albanese also posted a tribute to the late artist on Twitter.

The late artist’s fellow surviving members of The Seekers, including Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley, and Athol Guy, also issued a statement stating how their lives were changed forever, losing their treasured lifelong friend and shining star. As the fellow members’ further said how Judith’s struggle was intense and heroic and how she never complained of her destiny and fully accepted its conclusion while adding how they are blessed to share her magnificent musical legacy.
Judith Durham started her professional singing career at the young age of 18 after she asked the leader of the Melbourne University Jazz Band if she could join them. The Seekers delivered back-to-back hits, including “I’ll Never Find Another You,” “I Am Australian,” and “Georgy Girl,” as the folk music group managed to sell more than 50 million records worldwide!
