LE SSERAFIM recently unveiled their latest fashion lines, featuring Brand Merch and LE SSERAFIM X Peaches Collab Merch, which garnered both interest and controversy within their fan base.
The response on Instagram, where the brand showcased their new collections, has been far from unanimous. The comment section has become a battlefield of conflicting opinions, marked by an unfortunate presence of racist remarks.
Rather than showcasing LE SSERAFIM members in the promotional photoshoot, the brand chose to feature hired models, one of whom is a Black woman. This unexpected inclusion caught fans off guard, and reactions were immediate.
Some fans, upon seeing the black model, were taken aback. The first photo, which did not reveal the model’s face, raised concerns among netizens, fearing a potential blackface controversy.
However, the most troubling aspect was the emergence of racist comments. Some netizens expressed their discontent at the inclusion of a non-Asian model, explicitly stating their desire to “Keep K-pop Korean.” These comments were accompanied by vomiting emojis and derogatory terms aimed at Black people.
Conversely, Black fans welcomed the representation and diversity showcased in the photo shoot, particularly considering it occurred during Black History Month. The contrast in reactions highlights the diverse perspectives within the fan base, with some resisting change and expressing discriminatory views, while others embrace inclusivity and celebrate representation.
LE SSERAFIM’s foray into the fashion world seems to have unintentionally exposed underlying racial tensions within their fan community. As the controversy unfolds, it prompts reflection not only on the brand’s choices in representation but also on the broader challenges faced by the K-pop industry in navigating issues of diversity and inclusivity.
