The release date for Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York Episode 1 is here. In New York City, it was a terrible period. A serial murderer started murdering gay men in the city in the most terrible ways possible as the AIDS crisis was rising.
Every one of the victims was being dismembered. Their possessions were discovered on the ground not far from where their bodies were abandoned, and their body parts were placed in garbage cans in New Jersey.
Early in the 1990s, the neighborhood was afraid and furious. “Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York,” a new four-part documentary, centers on this chilling true-life story. The following episodes will debut every Sunday for the following three weeks. HBO/Max will also stream the show.
Plot Of The Show
A well-dressed middle-aged businessman from Massachusetts named Thomas Mulcahy is in New York City at the start of the narrative. He visits Manhattan’s Upper East Side’s upmarket gay bar, The Townhouse. Mulcahy, who is remembered by his daughter as a devoted father who cherished old Hollywood glitz and exuberant Broadway productions like “La Cage Aux Folles,” departs The Townhouse with a different man.
A few days later, Mulcahy’s dismembered body is discovered. A middle-aged man called Peter Anderson has the same fate shortly after. Anderson also met a man at The Townhouse, as Mulcahy did.
The LGBT community is frightened and furious. An anti-LGBT hate crime organization with a New York basis, the Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, gets involved. In the documentary, Matt Foreman, Bea Hanson, and David Wertheimer—all former members of the Anti-Violence Project—recall how the New York City police force did not treat these homicides with the urgency they deserved.
One NYPD officer who is now openly gay was interviewed for the series and described working in a place where being gay wasn’t safe. He recalls a fellow officer calling gay policemen “fuckin’ faggots” and threatening violence against them.
Then a third murder occurred, although the victim this time wasn’t on the Upper East Side. In the same way that Mulcahy and Anderson were assassinated, Anthony Marrero, a gay sex worker who frequently used the Port Authority bus station, too perished.
Marrero was a person of color who, according to his brother, was a secret keeper. There are then more murders. Speaking about their efforts to keep the community secure, Foreman and Hanson.
The police in New Jersey are far more helpful, they discovered, while the NYPD doesn’t seem to be much that interested in cracking the case. One former police investigator who talked on video today made his anti-gay prejudice abundantly clear. He questioned the filmmakers, “Why are you focusing on the gay?”
