M. G. Radhakrishnan introduced K.S. Chithra to Malayalam playback singing in 1979, and he went on to help her land several singing gigs for feature films and independent records. She composed music for movies such as Njan Ekananu, Snehapoorvam Meera, and Attahasam.
Her career took a drastic turn when she had the chance to open for one of the best vocalists in Indian music history, K. J. Yesudas, during several live performances.
Her subsequent collaborations with numerous seasoned music directors, including Johnson, Kannor Rajan, Jerry Amaldev, Shyam, and Ravindran, helped her secure additional singing assignments.
Chithra rose to prominence as the most sought-after female vocalist in the Malayalam music scene by the middle of the 1980s. In the Tamil music scene, K.S. Chithra debuted with the song “Poojaikketra Poovithu,” which was written by Ilaiyaraaja for the movie “Neethana Antha Kuyil.”
Later on, she recorded a number of Tamil songs for Ilaiyaraaja. She is officially acknowledged as the female vocalist who has performed the greatest number of Tamil songs for Academy Award–winning composer A. R. Rahman. With the dubbed version of a Tamil song titled “Paadalenu Pallavaina,” K. S. Chithra made her debut on the Telugu music scene.
The song “Abba Daanisoku” from the 1988 film “Aakhari Poratam” was her debut original Telugu composition. She rose to fame as a playback vocalist for the 1989 film Geethanjali, where she sang the song “Jallanta Kavvinta.” K. S. Chithra recorded her debut Hindi song, written by S. P. Venkitesh, in 1985.
It was never released, though. She collaborated with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam on duet songs written by Anand Milind in 1991 for the Bollywood movie “Love.” She signed on with Sony Music as an exclusive artist in 2000. While she was affiliated with Sony Music, she put out two pop albums, Piya Basanti and Sunset Point, both of which became enormous hits.
KS Chithra Controversy
Remarks made by renowned playback singer K.S. Chithra regarding the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya have resulted in a significant cyberattack.
In a Sunday video message, Chithra advised people to light lamps in and around their homes in the evening on January 22 and to chant Lord Ram chants.
“Greetings to all of you. At 12:20 p.m. on January 22, during the consecration ceremony at Ayodhya, all participants are asked to recite the Ram mantra, “Sri Rama, Jayarama, Jaya Jaya Rama.”
Similarly, all throughout the home, five-wick lights had to be lit in the evening. I’m praying for everyone to get God’s blessings. She uttered, “Loka samastha sukhino bhavanthu,” in the video.
Nevertheless, some Keralan internet users took offense to Chithra’s remark, accusing the singer of supporting the BJP and RSS’s objectives. The Kerala government and the ruling CPI(M) came under fire from Union Minister V. Muraleedharan for their lack of response to the singer’s attack on social media.
Extremist factions are becoming more dominant under Pinarayi Vijayan’s leadership. “Strongly denounce the manner in which Jihadi-trolls are harassing K.S. Chithra Ji for attempting to light a Dia on Pran Pratishtha day of Ram Lalla,” he said on X.
The silence of the Kerala CPI(M) spoke volumes about the support such divisive elements receive in Kerala under their government. Is this the “tolerance” the CPI(M) extols? Shame,” the clergyman wrote in another article.
Khushbu Sundar, a BJP leader and member of the National Women’s Commission, also spoke out in support of Chithra, stating that states controlled by the Congress and the Communists are the places where intolerance is most prevalent.
They lack the guts to learn the grace of acceptance and the ability to appreciate someone’s ideas. To them, it’s either my way or no way at all. Disgrace to them. The politician and performer expressed her support for Chithra Chechi in a post on X. Days after receiving the highly consecrated “Akshardham” from the Ayodhya temple, Chithra made her statements.
In a career spanning more than 40 years, the 60-year-old singer—also referred to as the “Nightingale of the South”—has recorded over 25,000 songs in a variety of languages. Six national film awards and thirty-six state film awards from six states have been given to her.
The Ram temple’s consecration event is scheduled for January 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and over 6,000 other guests are anticipated to attend.
Additionally, 50 visitors from overseas and 4,000 people from all around the nation have been invited by the temple trust.
