Sergio Pablos wrote the script and directed the animated Christmas movie, Klaus, for Netflix in 2019. The story centers on a postman sent to a northern town who befriends a lonely toymaker named Klaus. It serves as a fictitious origin story for Santa Claus.
By implying that the Santa Claus we know is, in fact, the ghost or spirit of a widower woodsman and toymaker named Klaus, the movie surely gives the tale of Old St. Nick a fresh spin.
The story of Klaus, which takes place in the 19th century, centers on Jesper Johansson, the self-centered son of a renowned Royal Postmaster General who is sent by his father to the depressing town of Smeerensburg. He meets the reclusive Klaus there and learns that his house is filled with handmade toys. In the end, the two work together to deliver Klaus’ goods to the children of Smeerensburg, ending the long-running conflict between the Krum and Ellingboe clans in the town and creating the legend of Santa Claus.
Klaus Explained
Jesper, the movie’s main character, is a spoiled brat from a well-to-do family in the postal service. He has no aspirations in life. When his father enrolls him in the Postal Academy, he purposefully stands out as the school’s worst student. As a result, his father places him on an island above the Arctic Circle with the threat of isolating him from the family if he doesn’t send 6,000 letters in a year.
It eventually becomes apparent that the island’s settlement is made up of two fighting families that almost ever exchanged words, let alone letters, when Jesper is taken there by a sarcastic ferryboat captain. Jesper is looking for a means to post letters from the town when he sees a distant little firm on the map in his office. There he finds a house filled with numerous handmade toys and a lonely woodworker named Klaus.
Until unexpected events occur, Jesper is about to give up when he gets the idea to have Klaus distribute his toys to the town children who had requested them and who would then write letters as a result. Klaus agrees to Jesper’s suggestion that the toys be donated, but only if the deliveries can be made at night so that Klaus can go with Jesper.
Toys For Christmas
When Jesper learns that many of the children are illiterate, he sends the kids to miss Alva, a teacher he met upon his first day in the community. The kids in the neighborhood start talking about Jesper and Klaus’ evolving actions as they give them toys. They assume Klaus is not only entirely accountable for these actions but also possesses some magical abilities due to the nature of those actions. Including silently entering homes through the chimneys and flying in reindeer-drawn sleighs.
Jesper informs the youngsters that Klaus would not reward misbehaving children with toys because he is aware of their actions. This causes the children’s views to shift, and their acts of kindness encourage the other citizens of the town to fall into line. When Jesper and Klaus eventually run out of toys to offer the kids, Jesper advises they limit their gift-giving to Christmas.
One day Klaus goes on to tell Jesper about his wife Lydia, he describes how they plan to have a lot of kids, and he built the toys they have just been giving away for them whilst they waited. However, they were never able to conceive, and Lydia finally fell ill and passed away. In addition to approving Jesper’s Christmas proposal, Klaus expresses his gratitude to Jesper for making him so happy in their effort to bring joy to the kids. A small group of helpful Sami people quickly help them in carrying out their plan.
Klause Ending
The leaders of the town’s feuding families unite to stop Jesper and Klaus’s plan in order to uphold the custom of their long-running rivalry. They devise a strategy that involves playing on his past and exploiting it against him. Jesper finally decides to stay in the island village, and he then does everything in his power to prevent the family heads from destroying the toys, even if it ultimately seems as though his efforts were in vain.
Klaus and Alva, on the other hand, were aware of what was about to happen and had made plans to foil the scheme by switching out the toys for wooden fakes. Additionally, Jasper’s actions brought up situations that forced the families to become in-laws.
As the situation in the community continues to improve, Jesper and Klaus continue to give gifts each Christmas, and as time goes on, their business keeps growing. Then, in the twelfth year, Klaus abruptly and mysteriously vanishes, joining his deceased wife. Every Christmas Eve, Jesper in Alva gets to glimpse the ghost of his friend as he continues to send toys to children all across the world. Jesper and Alva get married and also have two children together.
Klaus Ending Explained
The majority of Klaus is a fanciful yet realistic story of how the legend of Santa Claus came to be. However, there are early indications of something magical. When Klaus finally sees Jesper for the first time, the wind in the woods is causing odd leaves and snow swirls all around him. After delivering gifts to Smeerensburg and other towns over the previous 12 years, Klaus sees the very same swirls in the woods again towards the end of the movie. He follows them before disappearing without a trace, probably to be reunited with his loving wife in the hereafter.
In the epilogue, Jesper recalls how, following that, no one in Smeerensburg saw Klaus, but that every Christmas Eve, he manages to see his old friend once again. It is hinted that he meant that literally because Jesper is depicted waiting up late one Christmas Eve and hearing the sounds of sleigh bells jingling from the top of their home’s roof. While a more foreseeable ending would have had Jesper assuming Klaus’ role as Santa Claus and implying that he would eventually hand it off to someone else (starting a tradition), the film makes it abundantly clear that Klaus’ ghost or spirit is the one who brings presents every year.
Putting aside the “Undead Santa” jokes, Klaus’ ending seems like a logical end to the movie’s themes of the value of kindness. Before progressively becoming more selfless and realizing the worth of his job as a postman, Jesper initially assists Klaus in delivering his toys out of self-serving motives. As a result of his deeds, Klaus is motivated to share the toys he originally created for his late wife and the children they were unable to have with others. They also urge the other residents of Smeerensburg, including Alva, a former teacher turned fishmonger who only wants to leave the town, to show kindness to others and contribute to improving their community.
It’s important to note that the film does not depict Klaus’ ghost or spirit onscreen, leaving some space for speculation as to whom Jesper heard on his rooftop in the film’s last scene. The important thing is that Klaus’ kindness in life should be continued, as Jesper and Alva aim to do now that they are married. Christmas, on the other hand, serves as a yearly reminder for Jesper as to just how his time with Klaus improved him and may even bring the two back together.
Thoughts On Klaus
If we constantly check the news, it’s easy to believe that the world is a dreadful place that will only get worse. However, the reality is that even a small act of kindness or love may have an impact on an entire community, and all it takes is one person to start a shift.
This Netflix original has a creepy setting and a protagonist you won’t want to root for right away. However, towards the end, you are engrossed in the tale of how “Santa Claus” came to be. According to the story, Santa wasn’t always this magical being hovering above the earth. Instead, he was a regular guy who, with the help of his friends and a passion for change, provided joy and happiness to kids all over the world.
Yes, there are some genuinely unsettling characters in this film, along with crude humor, alcohol references, offensive words, and a startling amount of animated brutality. However, these things serve to show a striking contrast, emphasizing the value of compassion and the strength of selflessness. Due to its occasionally unsettling content, you might not want to invite your young children to see this movie. However, with a little guidance, it is a film that has the potential to start some interesting conversations.
